An opportunity has arisen for a capable and enthusiastic individual to join the Biochemistry department at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist
The successful candidate will work cross-site at laboratories Dewsbury District Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital. They will be supervised whilst performing a broad range of scientific, technical, and support work within the department, as required by biomedical scientists.
They will undertake training to attain up to date knowledge of all equipment and techniques used in the department whilst completing their HCPC registration portfolio.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will gain experience working in the busy biochemistry department across two hospital sites. The laboratory at Dewsbury and District hospital analyses samples from inpatients, emergency department patients plus GP and outpatient samples. The laboratory at Pinderfields Hospital serves as the hub for the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, analysing inpatient and emergency department patient samples alongside the bulk of the GP and out-patient samples from the local area.
The instruments in use across the trust consist of Roche chemistry and immunoassay modules, Tosoh G11 HPLC instruments, BIO-UV Spectrophotometer, Helena V8 Capillary Electrophoresis and an Advanced Instruments Osmometer. These are used in conjunction with the GLP automated track system to process blood, CSF, faecal, fluid, sweat and urine samples for over 100 tests. These include urea and electrolytes, liver function tests, bone profile, therapeutic drugs, specific proteins, hormones, vitamins, cardiac markers, tumour markers, faecal immunochemical test (FIT), HbA1c, electrophoresis and immunofixation to name just a few.
The successful candidate will rotate across the laboratory sites and around the different work sections being trained whilst completing their registration portfolio.
