Mid
Yorkshire Teaching Trust is looking for a highly motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic Matron to join our Maternity team,
with an initial portfolio of selected elements from both inpatient and
outpatient areas.
Approximately
4,600 women each year birth at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. We
provide antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care across the Wakefield district
and North Kirklees. We offer four choices of place of birth: home, freestanding
birth centre at Dewsbury District Hospital and the alongside birth centre and
consultant-led delivery suite in Wakefield.
At
Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust we are continuing to implement the National Maternity
Transformation Programme alongside our colleagues in the Local Maternity and
Neonatal System (LMNS) the Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) and other
community partners.
The Three Year Delivery Plan for Maternity
and Neonatal services and outcomes from Ockenden and East Kent reporting
provide a clear steer on high quality, safe care with improved outcomes, all of
which form part of our co-produced Maternity Strategy.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will demonstrate;
Effective
Leadership of the Midwifery Service.
Will have the Responsibility
for overseeing the management of the service, managing staff and liaising with
others as necessary.
They will act as a role model
to others, providing specialist expertise that is underpinned by some
theoretical knowledge and practical clinical experience and competence.

Job responsibilities
With the wider maternity staff team contribute
to the realisation of the Maternity Strategy. Maternity transformation plan and
the development of quality services.
Establish and contribute to the continuing
development of the Midwifery service philosophy of care, ensuring that it is
congruent with the beliefs and values upheld within the clinical setting.
Implement a systematic approach to midwifery
care based on accepted evidence based models, ensuring that care is planned,
implemented and evaluated in line with agreed standards, which are robustly
evidence based and planned in partnership with the patient. Utilise the
contribution of support staff appropriately.
Ensure that multi-disciplinary continuity of
carer pathways are implemented.
Keep staff informed on current clinical issues
and professional development.
Maintain clinical records in accordance with NMC
Code requirements
Ensure that a suitably sized sample of clinical
records are audited at least every six months e.g. planned home births, BBAs,
models of ante or post-natal care, labour records etc.
Provide statements as necessary within the
required time frames.
Ensure medicines are stored, supplied and
administered in accordance with Trust Medicines Guidelines and professional
guidance, and that practices are audited at least annually.
Act as an advocate for patients and their
families including the facilitation of choice and provision of support.
Ensure clinical procedures are performed
competently and that support is available for staff in the form of clinical
procedure documents, SOPs and training opportunities.
Respond to health emergencies and where practicable
contribute to the direct care of patients as needed.
Understand the role of the Midwifery Advisor
(MA) and inform the ADN/Head of Midwifery, Midwifery manager on call of any
circumstances in which safe and appropriate care for mothers and babies cannot
be or has not been provided.
Investigate and act upon any reports of
circumstances in which safe care cannot or has not been provided, reporting to
the Assistant Director of Nursing and Midwifery in a timely manner.
Ensure staff have the necessary equipment to
undertake their role, are using the equipment safely and that this is
appropriately monitored.
Ensure patient administration IT systems are
used in accordance with Trust policies and that staff are appropriately
trained.
Ensure appropriate timely communication with
patients, relatives and carers, advising and supporting them as needed. Ensure
support systems e.g. translators, bereavement, chaplaincy etc are used
appropriately.
Ensure the availability of relevant, up to date
patient information in a user friendly, accessible format.
Ensure effective multidisciplinary team working
across the service and also with external agencies.
