Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Nutrition and Dietetic Services at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust for motivated individuals to join the Dietetic team as Band 4 Dietetic Assistant. The post is ideal for an individual with an interest in nutrition and health care, especially those who may want to train as a Dietitian in the future. The Trust covers 3 hospitals: Dewsbury Hospital, Pontefract Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, home to the Regional Burns Unit.

The post is full time permanent and will be based at either Pinderfields Hospital or Dewsbury Hospital but with some requirement to work cross-site as and when required. The main remit of the post will be supporting the Dietitians in the management of patients both in the hospital and wider community for adult and/or paediatrics; this will include reviewing patients on the wards and undertaking telephone reviews for outpatients/telehealth clinics. The adult caseload will be based around nutritional support and malnutrition; the paediatric caseload may involve nutritional support; home enteral feeding; food allergies/intolerance.

Main duties of the job

To support the Dietitian in the assessment and implementation of treatment programmes for patients

  • To pursue and acquire ongoing knowledge and expertise for practice with relevant client groups.
  • To help organise and contribute to the assessment of patients using diet therapy materials and related equipment (eg weighing scales and anthropometric tools eg skinfold callipers) to meet dietetic goals identified by the dietitian.
  • To assess patients nutritional progress and provide advice as required under the supervision of the dietitian.
  • To undertake administrative duties as required supporting the supervising dietitians.
  • To undertake dietetic tasks in both 1:1 and group settings.
  • To work in conjunction with: Nursing and all staff on wards and clinics, medical staff, dietetic colleagues, other members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, relatives, carers and catering staff.
  • To work under the direct and indirect supervision of qualified staff in the performance of specific tasks using some autonomous initiative, some self-directed planning and time management.
  • To help organise and contribute to outpatient clinics and home visits to meet dietetic goals identified by the dietitian
  • To manage a caseload of patients (supported by specialist dietitian)

To promote effective nutrition care plans and best practice in all care settings by providing education, training and support for healthcare professionals and staff in care agencies.

To undertake an element of Lone Working while on Home Visits.
