Job summary

The successful candidate will be expected to have prior experience in DXA. The role may be undertaken on a full-time DXA basis; however, for candidates who wish to maintain their X-ray skills, there is flexibility to incorporate X-ray sessions into the job plan. A minimum of 50% of the role will be dedicated to DXA, with the potential for a greater proportion depending on service requirements.

The DXA service operates across Dewsbury and District Hospital and the Wakefield Community Diagnostic Centre.

The DXA service currently runs between 08:00 and 16:00. Time allocated to DXA includes both scanning and administrative duties, such as list preparation, auditing, and vetting.

For candidates who choose to undertake additional work within X-ray, this is a 24/7 service and participation may include a range of shift patterns in line with service needs.

Main duties of the job

  • To accurately perform DXA scans. If the candidate would also like to work partly in X-ray they would be expected to perform a range of general radiography scans, including theatre.
  • To act as a practitioner, justifying and vetting examinations for scans in-line with trust protocols
  • To contribute towards the efficient deployment of resources; enabling the patient to receive a safe accurate and timely examinations
  • To communicate effectively with patients and carers of varying abilities and understanding; explaining procedures in order to gain co-operation.
  • To re-assure and encourage patients and carers.
  • To liaise with multidisciplinary teams regarding examination needs and results.
  • To build and maintain good relationships within the team and other departments and disciplines, working together to develop service improvements.
  • To ensure the safe use of x-ray and associated equipment.
  • To report equipment malfunctions to senior staff and to help maintain comprehensive and accurate records of faults; ensuring that staff are kept up to date as to the working status of equipment.
  • To develop your understanding of IR(ME)R and IRR2017 regulations: working closely with the Radiation Protection Supervisors to continuously evaluate and monitor systems and practices.
  • To input, store and provide patient information on the directorate Radiology Information System maintaining the integrity and quality of the data consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
