Job summary
There is the exciting opportunity to join the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trusts Maternity department as a Maternity Support Worker.(MSW)
The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) undertakes duties in a maternity setting, under the direction and supervision of a registered midwife. MSWs complement the care that midwives provide to women and babies. This will be a post in the inpatients area, meaning you will be working alongside a team of midwives and doctors to facilitate individualised care for all women. As a Maternity Support Worker, you will perform routine observations and checks on both mum and baby, discuss physical and emotional concerns, give evidence-based advice and guidance, and refer to the Midwifery team if you have any worries or concerns. There will also be the opportunity to work in the operating theatre and offer support to birthing women.
An NVQ level 3 in Health care is required for this post
You will be supported to complete a Maternity Support Worker competency package which is a great opportunity to come and work in a team, developing your own skills both clinical and communication.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will
- Work under the direction of a registrant, participate fully in the delivery of planned midwifery care, within the boundaries of your role which may include chaperoning of patients, escorting/ transferring of patients and providing 1-1 or group enhanced care.
- Demonstrate own duties to new starters and supervises work of students and junior staff.
- Understand that there will be frequent exposure to emotional/distressing events, e.g. breaking of bad news
- Orders supplies under the direction of the Midwife in charge.
- Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
- Participate in general cleanliness and tidiness of ward environment.
- Undertake mandatory training and role specific training relevant to role.
- Record and escalate patient physiological observations.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Sepsis and when to escalate to a Registrant/ Medic
- Acts on your own initiative when delivering patient care with supervision accessible.
- Have the ability to organise their own daily workload, when delegated
- Support Midwifery team and Bereavement Midwife in the care of bereaved parents and women undergoing medical termination.
- To support and assist women to achieve successful infant feeding in accordance with the local policies and guidelines
