Job summary

The Biochemistry Department is seeking to appoint a highly motivated Band 7 Advanced Biomedical Scientist to join the team responsible for the day-to-day management and analytical quality of the Blood Sciences Laboratories at Dewsbury & District Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital within the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (MYTT).

The successful candidate will take on the role of departmental Training Officer, with responsibility for key aspects of the automated chemistry sections, including sweat testing collection and analysis. They will also provide senior support to the service in the absence of other Advanced Biomedical Scientists. A strong focus of the role will be the training, development, and ongoing professional growth of staff within the department.

Biochemistry services currently operate under a managed service contract, with equipment supplied by Advanced Instruments, Helena Biosciences, Roche Diagnostics, Sherwood Scientific, and Tosoh Bioscience. A new managed service contract is being introduced across the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts, with phased installation of new equipment at MYTT planned throughout 2026.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure that all work in the section is carried out to high technical, scientific and professional standards. (e.g. Departmental Standard Operating Procedures, Trust and National Policies).
  • To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work, including that of a specialist nature, within the section/department, as required by the Chief Biomedical Scientist.
  • To carry out testing on a range of bodily fluids and tissues many of which may be highly infectious and extremely unpleasant.
  • Dealing with the spillage of noxious and toxic chemicals and bodily fluids.
  • The direct communication of urgent results to clinicians and other staff as required.
  • IQC monitoring
  • To maintain expertise in the Biochemistry Department by continuous professional development.
  • To work independently as required, either as part of the out of hours service provision or during the normal working day.
  • To attempt to solve analytical and technical problems encountered while working independently or identified by more junior staff.
