Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic Biomedical Support Worker (Higher Level) to support the delivery of a safe, efficient and high-quality Blood Sciences service at Dewsbury. The role provides essential technical support to Biomedical Scientists across Blood Sciences, ensuring the accurate receipt, preparation, processing and transfer of patient samples.
You will undertake a range of laboratory duties including data entry on the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and the preparation of samples for analysis. Additional technical duties within Haematology include blood film preparation and staining, quality control, routine equipment maintenance, stock management and housekeeping. Working to departmental SOPs and UKAS ISO 15189 standards, you will contribute to patient safety, service continuity and quality improvement.
This is a hands-on role within a supportive, multidisciplinary team, offering structured training, competency development and opportunities to build a strong foundation for future career progression within pathology.
Main duties of the job
To avoid waste and work in a cost-effective way at all times.
To maintain clear and concise communication with users of the service at all times.
To take part in any training required to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of all equipment and techniques used in areas in which they work.
Support the delivery of a high-quality service across Blood Sciences by ensuring samples are processed efficiently and safely.
Adhere to departmental SOPs and health and safety policies at all times.
Accurately input patient and specimen data onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Perform preliminary inspection and preparation of samples for analysis.
Ensure samples are stored correctly prior to analysis.
Ensure the timely transfer of samples between DDH and PGH as required.
Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, and housekeeping of equipment and laboratory areas.
Maintain stock levels and check deliveries of reagents and consumables.
Escalate equipment or process issues promptly to senior staff.
Contribute to UKAS-accredited quality management processes through accurate record keeping and compliance with SOPs.
Participate in shift handovers to ensure effective communication and service continuity between day and evening teams.
