Senior Clinical Midwife (Labour Ward Coordinator)

Job summary

To ensure the delivery suite runs effectively and smoothly 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. To create an environment that promotes normality of birth and ensures a positive risk culture that promotes the safety of women and their families To provide professional and managerial leadership, support and direction for all staff employed within the Labour Ward and to directly manage the Senior Midwives and lead the midwifery team. To delegate lead roles to the labour ward coordinators and to be responsible for ensuring these roles are supported and carried out effectively. To undertake to oversee continual improvement of the service in response to National directives in line with Clinical Governance principles and continuous quality improvements of patient care. Contribute to strategic direction, business planning, project work and commissioning of services. To provide Midwifery leadership, advice and support to all Midwives employed within the Trust, ensuring excellence in practice within the statute as promulgated by the NMC and Department of Health. To work in partnership with the Trust Risk Management Team. To maintain, manage and develop a safe environment for staff patients and visitors and adhere to the Trust Risk Management Policy. To ensure accurate timely data is collected, by overseeing the databases, and staff training requirements for these

Main duties of the job

To monitor professional practice within the clinical area in order to provide the highest standard of care, developing and strengthening Midwifery roles where appropriate. To provide midwifery leadership, advice and support midwives employed within the Trust. To provide a clinical presence on the Labour Ward for being responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards. To support the Trust maternity services programmes to meet its statutory requirements and objectives in terms of Clinical Governance (CQC standards, Risk Management, CNST, clinical risk). Provide professional midwifery leadership to promote normality and women centred care. Proactively strive for continuous improvements in the delivery of high quality women focused care. To promote a positive learning environment where lessons are learnt and changes implemented to ensure delivery of a quality service. To improve standards of cleanliness within the ward/department. To provide a visible, accessible presence on the Labour Ward to whom patients and their families can turn for assistance and support. To facilitate the prevention of hospital acquired infections. Maintain a professional appearance in line with the Trust dress code Uphold the Trusts values and behaviours (available on the Trust web site) and behave in a manner fitting with the responsible position of the post holder, maintaining the public confidence
