Trainee Biomedical Scientist

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a capable and enthusiastic individual to join the Biochemistry department at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist.

The successful candidate will work cross-site at laboratories Dewsbury District Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital. They will be supervised whilst performing a broad range of scientific, technical, and support work within the department, as required by biomedical scientists. They will undertake training to attain up to date knowledge of all equipment and techniques used in the department whilst completing their HCPC registration portfolio.

Main duties of the job

Perform a broad range of scientific, technical and support work within the department as required by biomedical scientist staff.

Carry out testing on a range of bodily fluids.

Deal with any spillages of noxious and toxic chemicals and bodily fluids according to standard operating procedures.

Receive and process work including data entry according to the SOPs.

Perform a range of routine technical tasks using analytical skills.

Work under supervision as required.

Follow quality control procedures as set out in the departmental instructions.

Maintain high technical standards and ensure that such areas in which they work are kept clean and tidy.

Carry out routine and emergency maintenance and calibration of equipment.

Assist in senior staff in the evaluation of new methods and equipment.

Conduct audit in line with UKAS requirements and to participate in other internal and external audit activity as required.

Undertake their HCPC registration Portfolio with the support of the departments on a voluntary basis.

The post holder will gain experience working in the busy biochemistry department across two hospital sites.

The laboratory at Dewsbury and District hospital analyses samples from inpatients and emergency department patients.

The laboratory at Pinderfields Hospital serves as the hub for the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, analysing inpatient, outpatient and emergency department patient samples alongside the GP patient samples from the local area.
