Job responsibilities

The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is pleased to announce the introduction of these new roles aimed at doctors who are passionate about their practice and their career, and those who require temporary posts outside traditional models. Our posts will combine education and career development with practical patient-facing care. They would particularly suit individuals looking to increase their anaesthetic experience prior to applying for specialty training or at the end of training prior to applying for consultant posts.

These posts are not recognised UK training posts but will be treated as a trainee equivalent. MYDoc doctors will have a named supervisor and be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities to consolidate and develop alongside their experiential learning, with certificated outcomes or credentialing to support career progression.

Regional Post. Our department has a number of experienced teachers of regional anaesthesia and a broad range of surgical specialties (plastics, burns, trauma and orthopaedics). This post would provide regular lists with the opportunity to develop a wide portfolio of regional anaesthetic techniques under expert supervision.

Simulation. With a busy department, we hold regular multi-disciplinary training sessions to improve the care in emergency scenarios or in rare conditions. As well as providing service commitment for Obstetric or Acute anaesthesia, this post would focus on working with the consultant anaesthetic team to help deliver this simulation training programme.

An Introduction to the Specialty from Dr John Norris, Head of Clinical Service for Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Pain Services.

Our anaesthetic team includes 60 Consultants, 15 Speciality Doctors and 2 advanced critical care practitioners with 18 Specialty Trainees, 22 Core trainees and 2 Foundation Doctors. The clinical team is supported by a dedicated team of administrative staff, has office and networked computer facilities, and has Association of Anaesthetists recommended rest facilities.

We are a forward-looking department, striving for excellence in our services, and have recently been awarded ACSA accreditation. We provide anaesthetic services across our three hospital sites, Pinderfields (Wakefield), Dewsbury and Pontefract, which make up The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. Our Trust headquarters building at Pinderfields has modern, spacious, state of the art clinical and teaching facilities. There are 15 operating theatres at Pinderfields which is also our acute hub and obstetric centre with 3 dedicated maternity theatres, 8 theatres at Dewsbury Hospital and 4 in Pontefract. A new dedicated day-case facility at Dewsbury Hospital contains 2 theatres. Robotic surgery is supported at the Dewsbury site alongside the Pinderfields site.

Within our routine work, we are looking at ways to improve our perioperative care. We provide consultant-led cardiopulmonary exercise testing as standard for our major colorectal surgery and major urology patients, we have consultant-delivered acute pain ward rounds three times per week and participate in multi-centre NIHR perioperative research studies.

The Trust was granted full Teaching Hospital status in May 2023 and as a department we are firmly supportive of education and development.

We host local and regional teaching in Anaesthesia & ICM and our team has won several awards for training anaesthetists, ACCS trainees, paramedics & medical students. We are very proud of our training and research contribution and run a number of courses including in difficult airways and obstetrics. Our service is also the home of the internationally recognised MYRAG Regional Anaesthesia course.

We have a strong leadership pedigree and actively support leaders within the Trust. Our consultant body includes the deputy chief medical officer, regional organ donation lead, training programme directors and individuals involved in international emergency relief work and cave rescue.

This post will initially include duties on the resident rotas in either Acute or Obstetric Anaesthesia (or Critical Care by negotiation), including nights and long days. All rotas are compliant with working time regulations and the 2016 resident doctors contract, averaging 48 hours per week.

This is MY place to work. If you want to make it yours, get in touch and see what a career at Mid Yorks could be like for you.

The Service Role

Duties will primarily be based on our Pinderfields Hospital site, although our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites. All rotas are compliant with the new resident doctors contract, averaging 48 hours per week.

The main duties of the post will include:

Provision of anaesthetic care, both acute and elective, with responsibility for the management of patients with acute and chronic conditions.

Area of work will depend on an individuals skill-set and levels of competency.

On-call for obstetric anaesthesia, critical care or Acute on-call depending on level of experience and competency.

Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings.

Involvement in relevant administration duties.

Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate.

Active involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities.

The above list is not intended to be exhaustive and it is likely duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after discussion with the post holder.

Terms & Conditions and Tenure

Employment will be as a MYDoc Registrar on Trust Terms and Conditions of Service.

Appointment as a MYDoc Registrar is intended to be for a one year period as part of an individual development programme for the Doctor, however, the post is initially offered on a fixed term contract for 6 months after which we would envisage extension on a mutually agreed basis.

Pay Scale

These roles are equivalent to a doctor on a specialty training programme and will be paid on the equivalent pay scale to a CT4 grade £61,825.

Formal visits may only be offered to candidates who have been shortlisted for interview. Such candidates may be reimbursed their travel and subsistence expenses for one such visit only. In the case of candidates travelling from abroad, travelling expenses are normally payable only from the point of entry to the UK.

Should you require any further information please contact the Medical Staffing Department at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust on Tel: 01924 543642.

Appraisal and Revalidation

This post is not recognised for training and brings with it an obligation to engage with the process of revalidation on an annual basis.

All our Trust appointed doctors are required to engage positively with appraisal and revalidation. The Trust has procedures that comply with national recommendations. As a Trust employed doctor on a fixed term contract successfully appointed applicants will need to have a prescribed connection with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust via GMC Connect and will therefore have Dr Richard Robinson, the Medical Director at the Trust as their GMC Responsible Officer.

Continuing Professional Development

The Trust requires all its doctors to engage with continuing professional development, guided by the relevant professional associations or Royal Colleges. Time and funding is provided according to departmental and Trust policies, subject to approval through the clinical management structures. There is a programme of mandatory training which all relevant staff must complete as required.

Research

Medical staff are encouraged to develop areas of personal and/or research interest. This can be developed in liaison with the Trusts R&D department and in line with prevailing policies and research frameworks. The Trust is developing an expanding and outward-looking research programme.

Educational & Clinical Supervision

The post holder will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to hold regular meetings with them during their tenure to ensure appropriate development during their appointment.

Teaching

The Trust is keen to maintain its reputation for high quality training and to attract the highest calibre of trainee and career-grade doctors. All senior doctors are involved in training our doctors, students and other professions. There are many opportunities to develop training and education roles and many have taken on educational leadership roles within and beyond the Trust.
