Job responsibilities
The Mid
Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is pleased to announce the introduction of these
new roles aimed at doctors who are passionate about their practice and their
career, and those who require temporary posts outside traditional models. Our
posts will combine education and career development with practical
patient-facing care. They would particularly suit individuals looking to
increase their anaesthetic experience prior to applying for specialty training
or at the end of training prior to applying for consultant posts.
These posts
are not recognised UK training posts but will be treated as a trainee
equivalent. MYDoc doctors will have a named supervisor and be supported in
undertaking scheduled educational opportunities to consolidate and develop
alongside their experiential learning, with certificated outcomes or
credentialing to support career progression.
Regional Post. Our department has
a number of experienced teachers of regional anaesthesia and a broad range of
surgical specialties (plastics, burns, trauma and orthopaedics). This post
would provide regular lists with the opportunity to develop a wide portfolio of
regional anaesthetic techniques under expert supervision.
Simulation. With a busy department, we hold regular
multi-disciplinary training sessions to improve the care in emergency scenarios
or in rare conditions. As well as providing service commitment for Obstetric or
Acute anaesthesia, this post would focus on working with the consultant
anaesthetic team to help deliver this simulation training programme.
An Introduction to the Specialty from Dr John Norris,
Head of Clinical Service for Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Pain Services.
Our
anaesthetic team includes 60 Consultants, 15 Speciality Doctors and 2 advanced
critical care practitioners with 18 Specialty Trainees, 22 Core trainees and 2
Foundation Doctors. The clinical team is supported by a dedicated team of
administrative staff, has office and networked computer facilities, and has
Association of Anaesthetists recommended rest facilities.
We are a
forward-looking department, striving for excellence in our services, and have
recently been awarded ACSA accreditation. We provide anaesthetic services
across our three hospital sites, Pinderfields (Wakefield), Dewsbury and
Pontefract, which make up The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. Our Trust
headquarters building at Pinderfields has modern, spacious, state of the art
clinical and teaching facilities. There are 15 operating theatres at
Pinderfields which is also our acute hub and obstetric centre with 3 dedicated
maternity theatres, 8 theatres at Dewsbury Hospital and 4 in Pontefract. A new
dedicated day-case facility at Dewsbury Hospital contains 2 theatres. Robotic
surgery is supported at the Dewsbury site alongside the Pinderfields site.
Within our routine work, we are looking at ways
to improve our perioperative care. We provide consultant-led cardiopulmonary
exercise testing as standard for our major colorectal surgery and major urology
patients, we have consultant-delivered acute pain ward rounds three times per
week and participate in multi-centre NIHR perioperative research studies.
The Trust was
granted full Teaching Hospital status in May 2023 and as a department we are
firmly supportive of education and development.
We host local and
regional teaching in Anaesthesia & ICM and our team has won several awards
for training anaesthetists, ACCS trainees, paramedics & medical students.
We are very proud of our training and research contribution and run a number of
courses including in difficult airways and obstetrics. Our service is also the
home of the internationally recognised MYRAG Regional Anaesthesia course.
We have a strong
leadership pedigree and actively support leaders within the Trust. Our
consultant body includes the deputy chief medical officer, regional organ
donation lead, training programme directors and individuals involved in
international emergency relief work and cave rescue.
