MYDoc 2 Year CST Equivalent Rotational Training Programme Starting August 2024

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is pleased to announce these high quality and exciting posts, which have been designed primarily for trainees who have successfully completed their FY2 placements and wish to complete a CST equivalent training within Surgery. These posts are an ideal steppingstone for trainees between their FY2 and Specialty training posts and offer opportunities for applicants to develop skills and experience in other areas such as medical education and quality/service improvement. Our posts combine education and career development with practical patient-facing care. These posts are also suitable for trainees who wish to build their portfolios before applying for national core training rotations.

The post holders will be eligible for completion of certificate of equivalence of core training. This certificate will allow trainees to apply for national specialty training programmes (STR) of their choice. Each post holder will be assigned an educational supervisor and are expected to achieve all core training competencies set out by the ISCP. Trainees will be appointed at CT1 level and may be eligible to continue for a second year at CT2 level subject to a satisfactory Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP).

Main duties of the job

Posts will commence in August 2024 for a period of 12 months and may be extendible to 24 months subject to satisfactory ARCP. You will need to have successfully completed the FY2 year of training and worked within the NHS for a minimum of 6 months in any medical or surgical speciality including general practice. Applicants will need to provide evidence of completion of foundation training or alternative certificate on foundation competencies.

You will be expected to work within the following surgical specialties: Urology, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics or Otolaryngology depending on your rotation.

The post holders will participate on a full shift rota. They will work in collaboration with and under the direction of the Consultants and other members of the teams in the day-to-day management of patients within the service. Duties include ward rounds, assisting the consultants and senior trainees in the operating theatre, undertaking the pre- and post-operative care of patients on the wards, attending out-patient clinics and attending to referrals in the Emergency Department. The post holders will have the opportunity to attend departmental teaching every week. They will also be encouraged to undertake continuing medical education and study leave will be available as per the Trust policy.

Vacancies have arisen at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield within the Division of Surgery for doctors equivalent to CT level. The posts will include training in all the competencies required for completion of core surgical training. The post is offered on a fixed term 12 months with possible extension to 24 months, depending on successful ARCP after 12 months.

Post holders will need to have evidence of achievement of foundation competencies, via current employment in a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or 12 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competencies at the time of application. Only a valid FPCC (FACD 5.2) or alternative certificate of foundation competence will be accepted as evidence.

The post holders should have worked within the NHS for a minimum of 6 months in any medical or surgical speciality including general practice.

We are looking for doctors to work at CT equivalent level within various acute surgical specialities including Urology, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics and Otolaryngology (ENT). The CT1 and CT2 years will consist of 2 x six-month attachments per year. Successful candidates will be asked to rank their specialities of choice and the posts will be allocated based on the overall ranking after the interviews. We try and accommodate first and second choice requests whenever possible. Please note that these are not guaranteed and subject to change at the discretion of the training programme directors.Rotations may be changed based on the ARCP panel assessment of progression and individual trainee needs. Swaps to the rotation will only be permitted under exceptional circumstances and are at the discretion of the ARCP committee.

The Service Role

All the junior trainee rotas are compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract averaging 48 hours per week.

Duties will be based primarily on our Pinderfields Hospital site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.

During their tenure the post holders will further develop their core generic skills and contribute more to the education and training of the wider healthcare workforce. At the end of their tenure the post holder will have begun to demonstrate clinical effectiveness, leadership and the decision-making responsibilities that are essential for the next stage of their careers.

Pay Scale

These roles are equivalent to a doctor on the Core training programme which is currently paid at £43,923 per annum plus additional payments relevant to the specialty rota.

The MYDoc Training Programme Educational Input & Recognition

Doctors appointed to a MYDoc post will receive relevant educational input.

The weekly timetable should include a balance of activities appropriate to your grade, role and training requirements. You are required to maintain a dialogue with your Clinical and Educational Supervisor to ensure the balance of these activities meets your developmental needs.

Doctors who successfully complete their training programme will be awarded a Certificate of Equivalence of Core Training from the Trust. Doctors will use established work-based assessment (WBA) tools to chart progress and keep relevant evidence in an electronic portfolio system. There will be an annual review of progress based on evidence within the portfolios including the WBA, multi-source feedback, personal reflections and CPD, covering both clinical, personal, and professional development and a Certificate of Achievement (appropriate to that year/level of training) will be issued.

Appraisal and Revalidation

All our Trust appointed doctors are required to engage positively with appraisal and revalidation. The Trust has procedures that comply with national recommendations.
