Perinatal Peer Support Worker

Job summary

The role of Perinatal Peer Support Worker has been developed specifically for peoplewho have lived experience of using perinatal mental health services. Through sharingtheir own experiences, Peer Support Workers will inspire hope and belief that recoveryis possible in others. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, theywill promote choice, self-determination and opportunities for the fulfilment ofpersonally valued roles and connection to local communities.

Main duties of the job

To work as an integral and highly valued member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team in facilitating and leading patient-centred activities which inspire hope, control and opportunity for service users. To support individuals in identifying personal recovery goals to improve their quality of life and to support them to do the things they want to do and live the life they want to lead.

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support mothers with perinatal mental health challenges.
  • Use lived experience to inspire hope and promote recovery.
  • Help mothers set and achieve personal goals, access community resources, and attend appointments.
  • Collaborate with health visitors for education, signposting, and care planning.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality.
  • Model positive, strengths-based language and contribute to service improvements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ/QCF level 2 with demonstrable competences developed from experience in mental health services and a willingness to undertake appropriate training regarding the role.
  • NVQ level 3 in related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship
  • English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9-4 or A*- C or functional skills level 2)

Experience

Essential

  • Lived Experience of SMI challenges and recovery.
  • Experience of working with people experiencing SMI

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience of working with vulnerable adults in a paid or unpaid capacity
  • Experience of working in community setting

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of recovery principles and peer support values
  • Knowledge of Early Intervention in Psychosis care and Treatment Pathways

Desirable

  • Awareness of trauma informed approaches

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with a range of different people, including service users, carers members of the multidisciplinary team, other agencies and organisations
