Highly Specialist Art Psychotherapist - Fixed Term to March 2024

Job summary

To provide an Art Psychotherapy service to adults with learning disabilities in Doncaster. The service will be delivered at the Tickhill Road Hospital site and in settings most appropriate to the clients' needs within the locality of NHS Doncaster. Liaison with those involved in the patient's care (i..e carers, MDT colleagues, day services) is integral to the role.

Main duties of the job

  • Regularly receive highly complex, highly sensitive and/or highly contentious information regarding clients' clinical difficulties, past history, family background and risk to self/others
  • Communicate highly complex, highly sensitive and/or highly contentious information to clients, carers/families and other professionals where there is often significant resistance and barriers to understanding/acceptance, e.g. discussing a mental health diagnosis and psychological theory with a client or family member/carer
  • Provide highly contentious and/or highly emotive information to families/carers which may be perceived as being antagonistic or may be received in a hostile atmosphere, e.g. discussing the impact of the family members'/carers' behaviour on the client's emotional and/or mental health
  • Employ the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish a therapeutic relationship. This is intrinsic to the process of facilitating Art Psychotherapy.
  • Often there will be significant barriers to communication and understanding due to the clients' limited cognitive ability, sensory and/or physical difficulties. The post holder must therefore possess a range of highly specialist skills in order to communicate at the required level of ability
  • Possess the highly specialised communication/relationship skills necessary to effect change in clients with complex emotional, mental health and severe challenging behavioural difficulties
