Job summary

The Day Surgery Unit has two theatres. We have a variety of surgical specialities; carrying out day surgery procedures, such as; Gynaecology, Urology, ENT (including paediatrics), Max Fax, General Surgery & Orthopaedics. This list of activity can vary and is not exhaustive. We have designated lists to support those children or adults with severe learning disability to be able to access the tests they require for diagnostics/ treatment & those requiring Community Special Care dentistry. Within this role, it is key that you can diversify & work a combination of areas within the unit, for example, support the ward area, alongside your role. Further upskilling could be discussed & supported.

If successful, you would also work in the proposed Sussex Surgical Centre (SSC), due for completion in March 2025. The project will deliver a modern, purpose-built day surgery unit which will include a pre-assessment area, four theatres, admission, recovery stage one & two, discharge space plus associated support facilities. The new unit will increase the amount of day surgery activity that takes place across the trust. There would be an expectation, if required, due to service demand to support Eastbourne main theatres & our other ESHT sites. You will work alongside main theatre staff who currently help support & deliver our Day Surgery Unit utilisation.

Main duties of the job

The Assistant Theatre Practitioner will work under the direction a registered practitioner to:

Assist qualified staff in providing patient care directly and indirectly as a member of the Theatre team.

Contribute to the effective and efficient running of the service.

The Unit is currently open Monday - Friday, 7am until 19.30. This could be subject to change, with extended opening times being discussed to help utilisation & a potential delivery of a six-day service.

1. Provide clinical support as a member of the theatre team in operating Theatres:

Setting up Theatre

Operating and manipulating expensive and delicate specialist equipment

Assisting in the collection, transfer and positioning of patients. Develop physical skills, requiring dexterity and accuracy for positioning of patients for clinical procedures and knowledge and skills in manual handling.

Assisting the Scrub Team in performing surgical procedures after appropriate training

Cleaning in line with Trust Infection Control policy and stocking Theatre and theatre equipment

Collection and maintenance of equipment and supplies

Patient care under the direction of a Registered Practitioner

Specimen handling, labelling and transportation

2. Contribute to the maintenance of consistent standards of patient care

and Operating Department practice as agreed with the Theatre Team.

3. Contribute to effective service delivery through the efficient and economical use of all resources in Theatre environment. Take a responsibility for ensuring that clinical stock levels are maintained.

4. Clean in accordance with the requirements laid down by Infection Prevention and Control and your Department Matron. Prepare and use cleaning solutions and materials in order to ensure care environment and equipment are suitable for use according to COSHH assessments and manufacturer guidelines.

5. Accurate completion of patient and departmental documentation and record activity for theatre information system as required. Ensure all documentation is filed and stored appropriately.

6. Record critical incidents and report to a Registered Theatre Practitioner.

7. Adheres to policies and procedures and contributes to the review and updating of operational policies and practice guidelines, the collection of activity data and maintenance of records.

8. There is an expectation to participate in out of hours cover for the Department

9. Contribute to a positive and supportive environment for all members of the Team.

10. Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to patients and staff.

11. Maintain and improve own knowledge and competence through an agreed personal development plan.

1. Contribute to the provision of a safe and therapeutic environment for staff, patients, carers and visitors.

2. Report Incidents involving patients, visitors and staff to Registered Practitioners according to relevant Trust Policy and Procedures. Particular reference to be made to:

5. Refer to the Registered Practitioner regarding any care or clinical situation that is not within your current level of responsibility or any agreed Department Scope of Practice that is commensurate with Band 3.
