Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant Cardiologist post with a special interest in Heart Failure and Cardiac Imagingin East Sussex Hospitals Trust.

This is an exciting time to join a progressive and dynamic cardiology department with supportive colleagues, working together to improve the cardiac health of our diverse local population.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our team and work to deliver consultant led, efficient, safe, and patient centred best practice in cardiac imaging and heart failure care. The successful applicant would be joining a busy, forward-thinking cardiology department which is continuously looking to innovate and improve services. There are opportunities to support cross sectional imaging as well as joint a multidisciplinary heart failure team.

The appointee should hold a CCSTand be accredited in Cardiology as well asCardiac Imaging (BSE) Heart Failure They will form part of the cardiology CCU rota and this is a cross site post.

The post-holder will join a team of 11 Consultant Cardiologists and will be part of the development of a multi-disciplinary team approach to care within the speciality of cardiology.

Heart Failure (HF)

There is an extensive and well-developed multidisciplinary heart failure service offered across both sites, with an in reach service offering specialist review and support to inpatients across all wards and twice-weekly consultant-led ward rounds. There are weekly MDT meetings with core team members including Acute and Community HF Specialist Nurses, Specialist Pharmacists and Palliative Care team colleagues.

East Sussex has become a leading trust for innovative virtual wards, which has led the way within the network. This has been facilitated by the integration with community services.

There is a robust link with specialist colleagues based at Harefield Hospital for patients being considered for mechanical circulatory support or cardiac transplantation. There are also close links with the local hospices (St Wilfrids and St Michaels) for patients requiring palliative and/or end of life care.

Echocardiography

Echocardiography services at ESHT are delivered on both sites.Eastbournehas been BSE Departmental Accreditation for TTE and training.The department at Conquest is also working towards BSE Accreditation. 4D TTE and TOE are available on both sites.

There is an active program of stress echocardiography using both bicycle exercise and dobutamine stress. Cardiopulmonary Exercise Stress testing (CPEX) facilities are available to complement stress echo on theEastbournesite. Across ESHT, approximately 800 stress echo studies are performed per annum.

Eastbourne DGH developed the nations first sonographer-led Valve Clinic and there is an active program of stress echocardiography for severe valve disease.An active program of research into stress echo for heart failure and valve disease is in place.A quality assurance program for TTE underpins the service with systematic over-reading of studies.

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Imaging

A new 1.5T MRI scanner with cardiac imaging capability was installed at the Conquest site in 2019, and an in-house CMR imaging service has recently commenced operation to meet the demands of the local population. This is currently running as a mentored service with assistance from colleagues at St Thomas Hospital

  • MB BS or equivalent
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Full Registration with GMC On Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment or to have obtained CCT in Cardiology within 6 months of interview

Desirable

  • MD/PhD or equivalent

Training & Experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Cardiology, with a specialist interest culminating in the award of a CCT
  • Training/experience in Heart Failure
  • BSE or equivalent training in Transthoracic Echocardiography
