Job summary

The Cellular Pathology department at Calderdale Royal Hospital is seeking to recruit a Bank Mortuary Assistant.

The post holder will act primarily as Mortuary Assistant but will also act as a Biomedical Support Worker in the cellular pathology laboratory when required. They will assist with the day to day provision of a high quality service in both sites (HRI & CRH).

To assist in the provision of the cellular pathology and mortuary service for the trusts hospitals and CCGs.

Main duties of the job

The role will also involve liaising with a range of people such as pathology staff, funeral directors and relatives of the deceased.

The post holder will take part in the mortuary on call rota which includes a viewing service.

The post holder will:-

Support the Managers and Senior Staff of the laboratories and mortuary on a day to day basis.

Maintain quality standards throughout the department, ensuring that the department works to UKAS and HTA standards at all times.

Attend mandatory training/courses in accordance with Trust policy.

Be conversant with the Trusts Personnel policies and Procedures

  • To inform the Departmental Manager of issues relevant to the work of the department.
  • To direct enquiries to appropriate members of staff
  • Clean, disinfect and maintain mortuary equipment
  • Take charge of the reception, identification and storage in secure, safe and hygienic conditions of all bodies received.
  • Release of the deceased to authorized funeral directors in accordance with the law and safety procedures and deal with certificates required for disposal and cremation.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of the deceased and their property in the mortuary, mortuary register and on the mortuary database and ensure the safe keeping of clothing, property and valuables of the deceased

  • Take receipt of clinical samples from wards clinics and GPs checking label details match request form
  • Enter accurate patient request details and sample numbers onto Pathology computer system
  • Ensure awareness of all sample codes and locations
  • Follow correct procedure for infected spills and leaking samples
  • Follow unlabelled sample protocol
  • Perform laboratory duties as described in standard operating procedures and following health and safety procedures.
  • Tracking/storage and retrieval of samples
  • Preparation of samples
  • Filing of blocks and slides
  • Scanning of documents
  • Posting reports
  • Cleaning of laboratory equipment and benching
  • Monitor refrigerator and freezer temperatures
