Job summary

Based inside or outside of the hospital with our midwives the role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with them and the wider multidisciplinary team in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to patient centred care.

The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the birthing person and their family, and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training.

Candidates should have experience of working with birthing people, have a willingness to learn and be committed to have a caring approach towards birthing people and their families. Individuals should be adaptable, hard-working and motivated to provide high quality care for women and families.

Main duties of the job

The role of the MSW is varied. You will receive skills and competency training bespoke to your area of work to ensure you are able to provide safe and excellent care to birthing people their families. You will also assist the midwifery staff in carrying out necessary clerical work and help to communicate administrative information across the multidisciplinary team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To observe the patients physical needs and undertake baseline observations (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, CO2 monitoring, respirations) and report any changes or abnormal results to the midwife.

To promote and support birthing peoples emotional wellbeing.

To perform phlebotomy when required and appropriate in accordance with training and Trust Policy and procedure, including obtaining informed consent for tests and the correct completion of relevant request forms as delegated by the midwife.

Undertake cannulation as required.

Perform ECGs as required.

Obtaining samples at the request of a midwife, including MRSA swabs.

Chaperone midwives/obstetricians as required as per Trust Policy.

To ensure the environment is clean, tidy and safe for visitors and staff.

To contribute to a safe working environment and improvement of patient care and experience.

Monitor and maintain stock levels as required.

To participate in planning individualised care plans, under the direct supervision of the midwife.

Seek to maintain a high standard by always working to unit/ward policies and procedures and act in a professional manner.

To report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the midwife in charge.

To establish good relations with all grades of staff to ensure that good communication is maintained.

To work in a manner that protects confidentiality at all times.

May be responsible for requesting patient transport and/or interpreters as required.

To provide assistance in helping birthing people access services.

To be able to recognise when additional care/support is required for vulnerable birthing people and their families and provide care directly and indirectly as advised by the midwife.
