Specialist Outpatient Physiotherapist

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties

- To autonomously manage a clinical caseload of patients/service users at a specialist level. Using skills in assessment, shared decision making, treatment and rehabilitation strategies and motivation to address lifestyle changes.

- Maintain accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous records

- To use shared-decision making to support patients to set their own goals and be confident in their approach to self-management.

- To have specialist assessment and treatment skills which may include, but not limited to:

*Physical rehabilitation through manual therapy

*Physical rehabilitation through exercise and function

*Physical rehabilitation through pain relief which could include acupuncture, electrotherapy etc.

*Complex bio-psychosocial assessment of patients

*Cognitive and perceptual understanding of condition/person

*Falls assessment

- Use appropriate outcome measures

- To apply evidence-based knowledge within the specialist clinical area acquired through experience, self-directed learning and appropriate access to academic study at post graduate level.

- To act, within the MSK physiotherapy service, as a resource and provide advice for physiotherapists, other professionals and colleagues within the MDT about the assessment, treatment, management and care of service users across our pathways.

- To work collaboratively with other providers involved with the patients care including medical and surgical consultants, the health and social care community and acute colleagues.

- To work with any appropriate members of staff to ensure effective care pathways and transfer of care / discharges.

- To work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary manner with any appropriate member of staff being able to work across blurred boundaries if appropriate.

- To develop specialist programmes of assessment, treatment and intervention for patients for patients referred to the MSK physiotherapy service.

- To manage and prioritise own clinical workload as appropriate, working efficiently to manage professional time and delegate according to the training and competency levels of other team members to ensure the effective delivery of the service.

- To participate in the supervision process with staff on a daily basis and for students as required.

- To ensure a high standard of patient care is provided and to assist the Team Manager and Clinical Lead Physiotherapist to implement and review clinical standards relevant to the work undertaken.

- To use networks locally regionally and nationally where appropriate to share information and good practice

- Dependent on Service requirements and previous experience you may be required to participate unsupervised in the out of hours respiratory on call service and weekend orthopaedic service, where needed.

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

Essential

• Relevant Degree / Diploma
• Registered with HCPC
• Evidence of relevant Post Graduate training

Desirable

• Member of Professional Body
• Studied at Masters level or equivalent
• Previous training in relevant field.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential

• Recent experience demonstrating a specialist ability to assess, treat and evaluate care for in MSK physiotherapy
• Experience working as musculoskeletal physiotherapist within the NHS
• Good Clinical Reasoning skills
• Evidence of CPD, self-directed learning and Reflective Practice
• Proven ability in implementing Clinical Governance
• Critical Appraisal Skills
• Ability to maintain legible and accurate records
• Teaching/Presentation skills
• Knowledge of relevant legislation and local/National initiatives
• Attendance at relevant Special Interest Groups
• Experience developing others
• IT literate (email/internet)
• Ability to case manage patients with long term conditions/multi pathologies
• Comprehensive knowledge of appropriate and available Physiotherapy assessments and approaches in the specialty
• Experience of breadth and depth of physiotherapy practice across core work areas.
• Specialist knowledge of musculoskeletal physiotherapy
• Detailed and up to date knowledge of MSK pathologies
• Current knowledge of EBP relating to the position
• Excellent communication skills including being aware of motivational interviewing/ADP approaches

Desirable

• Experience in contributing to service improvements e.g. Audit, patient information etc.
• Experience in dealing with complaints (e.g. diffusing complaint or investigating complaint)
• Experience in supervising and training others
• Experience of carrying out PDR's
• Relevant Accredited Postgraduate Training
• Previous experience working at Band 6 level
