Job summary

Applications are encouraged from experienced consultants wishing to take up a new challenge or newly accredited consultants who will be supported through our highly regarded development programmes. The post holder is encouraged to develop his/her own sub-specialty interest.

There are Full-Time posts providing 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), but applicants wishing to work part-time are also encouraged to apply and job plans will be adjusted accordingly, and by negotiation with appointees.

Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Departments at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary are currently led by consultants who work across both sites. Specialist and Associate Specialist Doctors, Specialty Doctors, Higher Trainees, Clinical Fellows and Trust doctors provide 24 hour 'shop floor' cover at both sites.

There is a consultant led Trauma Team at Huddersfield, which has been designated a Major Trauma Unit in the West Yorkshire Regional Trauma Network. Both Huddersfield and Calderdale have 4 resuscitation bays, including a dedicated paediatric resus area, with X-ray and ultrasound facilities.

There are separate majors and minors areas in both departments. There is a dedicated Emergency Department physiotherapy service which runs clinics across both sites.

About us

The Trusts is investing in its Emergency Medicine department and is recruiting to consultant posts These are new posts to support the senior delivery of Emergency Care and the development of the service within Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

In 2018, the Department of Health and Social Care approved investment of £196.5 million to support reconfiguration of hospital services across Calderdale & Huddersfield which includes development of a purpose-built Emergency Department at Huddersfield as well as an Urgent & Emergency Care Centre at Calderdale, due to open autumn 2023.

We are transforming our services so all acute inpatient services are delivered at Calderdale Royal Hospital and will involve the design and build of an Urgent and Emergency Care Centre including a new Emergency Department, Urgent Care facility, dedicated Paediatric Emergency Department, along with purpose built Same Day Emergency Care facilities and a number of new wards.

  • Participate in the day-to-day training and supervision of junior medical staff and with all other training/teaching activities facilitated by the department.
