Job summary

We are looking to appoint a quality driven Histopathology Locum Consultant to join our high performing team at the Calderdale Royal Hospital site. We are looking to enhance our friendly and committed team of seven consultants with an individual who can drive our continued success and contribute to an exciting future.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to share responsibility with the other Cellular Pathology Consultants for the provision of a high-quality comprehensive service to the Calderdale & Huddersfield Foundation Trust and two local Clinical Commissioning Groups. It goes without saying that histopathology is a valued resource, processing approximately 26,300 Histopathology samples, 2000 Non-gynae Cytology samples and 2130 Andrology samples per annum.

About us

The Pathology Department at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is situated at both the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital sites. The Histopathology department is based at Calderdale Royal Hospital and is housed in a modern, purpose-built laboratory, providing a comprehensive clinical and diagnostic service across the Trust. The Department is UKAS ISO: 15189 (2012) Accredited and has IBMS and RCPath Training Approval. The successful candidate will be provided with a modern, spacious office. The appointee will also be provided with an excellent modern microscope. Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is one of the leading Trusts nationally for digital innovation, and is currently working with Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, as part of the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT), for implementation of Digital Pathology which will enhance flexible working.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This is afull-time post based on a 10 PA contract, although less than full-time working options will be considered.

Applicants must possess the FRCPath or show evidence of its equivalent qualification. The post holder must be fully registered with GMC and hold a current license to practice. It is desirable but not essential for applicants to have specialist registration for Pathology (or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK) but consideration will be given to applicants with relevant consultant level experience or trainees in a UK training scheme who are within 6 months of attaining specialist registration

There is no sub-specialisation in Cellular Pathology at present and consultants participate in all areas of work, including histology, non-gynae cytology and MDTs. Excellent support is available from biomedical scientists for cut up, including larger cancer specimens from breast and colon. In addition, the department currently has a trainee reporting BMS. There are lead pathologists for the various cancer sites for which the Trust is recognised in line with Cancer Unit Recognition, currently skin, breast, colon, urology, respiratory and gynaecology. Weekly MDTs are held for cancers of the following disciplines: breast, colorectum, lung, urology, skin and gynaecology. Monthly MDTs are held for colposcopy. It could be arranged for the successful applicant to take lead roles in an area of cancer histopathology, if desired. The Trust has taken the lead for Bowel Cancer Screening in the Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield areas, covering a population of approximately 1 million. The department enjoys close working relationships with the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service for lymphoid diseases, and other specialist services at Leeds and Bradford. Coronial post-mortems are performed at Bradford and there is no post-mortem service at CHFT.
