Job summary
Support Time and Recovery Worker - Mental Health Court Justice
We're looking for a full time Support Time & Recovery (STR) Worker to join our Hampshire & Isle of Wight Liaison & Diversion Service based in Newport.
What is the role of an STR worker?
Our STR roles are different to standard Healthcare Assistant or Support Worker roles. An STR Worker plays a vital role in supporting people who've had contact with the police, been arrested, or may be at risk of entering the criminal justice system. You'll be there to listen, provide practical support, and help them connect with the services they need to turn things around.
This role is perfect for someone who is enthusiastic, dynamic, and passionate about supporting people to make positive changes.
We're looking for candidates educated to NVQ level in Health and Social Care (or equivalent), or with relevant experience in a health or social care setting.
Applications for this role will be considered as they are received and the vacancy may close early.
Main duties of the job
- Work alongside custody practitioners, helping to triage and screen people in custody. If someone is at acute risk or has complex needs, you'll escalate this to a clinician quickly and appropriately.
- Support the wider STR workforce by offering advice and guidance across Hampshire & IOW criminal justice settings.
- Hold a small caseload of service users, helping them access community services such as housing, benefits, mental health support, or drug and alcohol services.
- You'll encourage engagement, motivate change, and give people the best chance of recovery and stability.
- Work alongside Liaison and Diversion practitioners as part of the Liaison and Diversion Team. Work with people who are within criminal justice systems providing support with practical concerns or difficulties that might be affecting their health and wellbeing.
- To write court reports and assist the courts in identifying community disposal roles as opposed to custodial sentences.
- To provide effective evidence-based screenings of complex service users, building a therapeutic trusting relationship, signposting and referring to appropriate services, liaising with families, carers, and other professionals where appropriate to ensure that service users' needs are met.
- Operate flexibly countywide in the community, custody suites and magistrates' courts.
- To work independently with caseload work managed and goals agreed that are reviewed regularly through supervision.
