Job summary

Are you interested in pursuing a career in the community as a Health Visitor, working with children and families to improve their health and well-being and keen to develop the required skills and knowledge to support you in gaining access to the Specialist Practitioner training programme?

If so, Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust has an exciting opportunity for you to develop public health skills and knowledge, as a Development Community Staff Nurse for Health Visiting (two year fixed-term, full and part time hours (0.8WTE - 1.0WTE) available).

You will work within one of the locality health visiting teams across West Berkshire and Reading but will need to be flexible around working from different sites as they support children aged 0-5, their families and Health Visiting colleagues. They will support the implementation of the Healthy Child Programme underpinned by the Solihull Approach model of working.

The competency-based framework and learning opportunities will support your access to the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme (SCPHN/HV). This post will also be supported by the locality managers, colleagues, a named supervisor and Community Practice Teacher (CPT) as well as the Professional Development Lead to ensure that all learning outcomes and competencies are completed prior to commencement onto the SCPHN course. The Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme is offered by BHFT at either Oxford Brookes or Bucks New University.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide support to families within a variety of community settings under the direction of the Health Visitor, taking into account the diverse social, health and wellbeing needs of the community.
  • To plan and deliver health enhancing activities for children and their families to include working in groups, child health clinics, developmental review clinics, and on an individual basis.
  • To provide support to families using the Solihull approach model in behaviour management, parenting skills and delivering programmes of care to vulnerable families as identified by the health visitor.
  • To support breastfeeding and parent infant relationships applying the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative standards.
  • To liaise with other agencies and services to provide integrated and cohesive support for children and their families, under the direction of the health visitor.
  • Work with the HV team to achieve the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) especially focussing on the antenatal and the 6-8 week postnatal contacts
