Paediatric Diabetes Nurse Specialist

Job summary

The Band 6 Paediatric specialist nurses role requires a passionate, highly motivated and experienced Nurse with excellent communication skills, who considers themselves first and always the childs advocate, someone who wishes to continue to develop their clinical and leadership skills, delivering high quality care to our children and young people and their families. Using guidelines set out by NICE, ISPAD and BSPED.

Main duties of the job

We are part of the North West Paediatric diabetes network we are audited using the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit and comply with peer review.

You will demonstrate safe critical decision making skills whilst working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the child/young person and their family.

We work closely with our CYP Transition Nurse, Youth Worker and Wellbeing Practitioner along with the adult diabetes team to provide effective transitional care for our young people.

About us

We provide diabetes care for children with all types of diabetes within Warrington, Halton and some of the surrounding areas. We are based within Warrington Hospital and also undertake monthly clinics at Halton hospital. As we work within the community providing home and school visits it is essential that the applicant holds a full drivers license and has access to a car.

We provide a 365 day service by providing an on call service via the telephone at the weekends and bank holidays as part of the Diabetes Best Practice Tariff.

  • Understanding and awareness of childhood diabetes and the impact on family
  • Knowledge of changes in nursing practice to improve patient care
  • Significant nursing experience
  • Previous experience as PDSN

Desirable

  • Significant nursing experience looking after patients with Type 1 Diabetes on ward including newly diagnosed and DKA.
  • Previous experience on looking after children and young people on insulin pump therapy, flash glucose monitoring and continuous glucose monitoring.

Qualifications

Essential

  • RSCN/RNCB
  • Willingness to undertake further personal and professional development
  • Up to Date with mandatory training and Level 3 safeguarding training
  • Paediatric diabetes course or equivalent, knowledge, skills and competency

Desirable

  • Degree in nursing or related subject or evidence of degree level learning in paediatric nursing
  • Leadership and management Course
  • Mentoring qualification eg ENB 998
  • V300 course
  • Evidence of further professional development

  • Expanded clinical skills, with interest in care of diabetic children and their families
  • Knowledge in the use of insulin pumps therapy, Continuous glucose monitoring and flash glucose monitoring and how to interpret the data once downloaded.

  • You are able to communicate effectively with them and with other staff to ensure that their care, treatment and support are not compromised
