Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHSFT

Staff Counsellor

The closing date is 18 February 2026

Job summary

You will work in the People Directorate within the Occupational Health and Wellbeing service, with a small team of counsellors. Your role will be dedicated to providing effective and supportive therapeutic interventions for Trust staff. The team is committed to delivering high-quality treatment that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing across the organisation.

In this 15-hour per week role, the postholder will provide professional counselling support to employees, managers, and the wider workforce through face-to-face, telephone, or secure video sessions, depending on service need.

The postholder is skilled in conducting assessments, formulating treatment plans, and delivering brief counselling interventions, often requiring sustained and focused concentration. You will demonstrate a strong understanding of evidence-based psychological therapies and their practical application, and be able to manage a part-time caseload effectively.

The role requires excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, alongside a high standard of professional written and verbal communication. The postholder must also be capable of producing complex or clinically sensitive information for both service users and professional colleagues.

Main duties of the job

You will assess clients and determine appropriate interventions in line with the Mental Wellbeing Hub's stepped-care model, developing and delivering counselling or brief therapy plans that reflect client requirements. Operating autonomously within professional guidelines, you will maintain responsibility for clinical governance while managing your own caseload, prioritising tasks, and completing any required audits or evaluations.

The postholder will also offer consultation to staff and managers, supporting them to reflect on challenges, explore options, and access appropriate resources, including responding to general workplace mental health queries.

Working collaboratively with the Mental Wellbeing Hub team and the wider People Directorate team, you will contribute to the development and delivery of initiatives such as workshops, group interventions, and online resources. This will keep up to date with current counselling approaches through relevant training, participate in the development and review of service policies and procedures, and engage in regular clinical supervision with an appropriately qualified senior practitioner.
