About us

The department is a busy general paediatric department. Acutely ill patients are referred either directly by their General Practitioners or by the Accident and Emergency Department. Referrals mostly go the six bedded Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) on B10. If they need a longer admission then they are transferred to either B11 Bays which has two six-bedded areas and two cubicles, or B11 Cubicles which has ten cubicles, one of which is a designated High Dependency Area. Both areas take medical and surgical (including subspecialties) patients up to 18 years of age. There were five thousand medical admissions/PAU attendances per year. Also, on B10 is a six bedded bay and a cubicle which are used for day case surgery (ENT, General surgery, Dental, Ophthalmic).

Job description

Job responsibilities

The two Paediatric Wards are situated on Burtonwood Wing. B11 ward is split into two areas: B11B which has two 6-bedded bays and two cubicles, and B11C with ten isolation cubicles, one of which is designated as an HDU bed. B10 ward has a 6-bedded area for day case surgery and a 6-bedded Paediatric Assessment Unit. A separate new purpose-built paediatric outpatient area is adjacent to B10.

Adjacent to the wards is a new purpose-built paediatric outpatient department which has been designed to ensure the environment provides our patients have the best experience and our clinicians can provide an efficient service. This has six consulting rooms, a virtual clinic room, a dedicated weigh room, infant feeding room, a treatment room, office space and an MDT conferencing room. Approximately 8000 patients are seen at the Warrington and Halton paediatric clinics each year. To support this activity Staffing support for the department is substantial.

There are several regular specialist clinics provided by visiting consultants from Tertiary unit Alder Hey Childrens Hospital hosted at Warrington Hospital.

The Neonatal Unit has 18 neonatal cots including three intensive care cots. 2657 babies were born in 2021 at Warrington Hospital. The unit is supported by highly skilled maternity midwifery and medical team. As part of the Mersey and Cheshire Neonatal Network, the unit accepts inpatient referrals from the other units in the region. We are also part of the Northwest Region Operational Delivery Network. The unit is designated as a Level 2 or local neonatal unit, providing intensive care for babies of 27 weeks gestation and above. During 2021/2022, Warrington neonatal unit had a total of 294 neonatal admissions (this includes 998 days of combined intensive and high dependency care). There is a neonatal community nursing team supporting babies discharged on oxygen and other high-risk infants. We have highly skilled and experienced Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNP) who are part of the middle grade rota. We have developed new middle grade rota supported by experienced speciality paediatricians and newly appointed paediatric consultant. All the consultants share neonatal care; however, Dr Webb is the Lead for Neonatology.
