Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Glaucoma to join our team of 7 Consultants, 1 associate specialist, 2 Specialty doctors and 4 ophthalmology surgical trainees.

The department also includes a large Orthoptic and Optometry team to support the post holder alongside a large Imaging and nursing team that has several nurse specialists in extended roles including cataract and subspecialty postoperative reviews.

Warrington is a forward-thinking department and over the last few years has made transformational change to patient pathways such as most glaucoma and retina patients are managed in a virtual setting. The Ophthalmology department at Warrington is located in Daresbury Wing of Warrington Hospital. The eye unit includes 27 clinical examination rooms, diagnostic and imaging rooms, vision rooms and 2 injection theatre suites. There are 2 laser rooms on site with YAG / SLT laser, an Argon laser and a PASCAL. There is a dedicated glaucoma assessment unit supported by an ORA, Anterion, Anterior and posterior segment OCT that runs ten sessions per week to provide the necessary tests for virtual review using EPR and imaging platforms. There are a wide range of anterior and posterior segment cameras and OCT machines including an Optos, OCT angio that supports virtual review of variety of retinal cases.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to provide independent management of all general and sub-specialty patients including emergency surgical repair. There will be core DCC which will include 4 Outpatient clinics and 2 theatre sessions. There will be an opportunity to have flexible DCC commitments and remote working where applicable.

The post holder will be expected to join the on-call rota which has an attractive 1:14 on call commitment. The on-call commitments are shared with Mersey and West Lancs Teaching Hospitals.

Warrington provide senior support to junior members of staff and ophthalmology trainees and there is a Monday - Friday offer of support, which is shared between the Consultants to reduce emergency cover to only one day a week for each consultant. Teaching of Ophthalmology surgical trainees is expected.
