Upper GI Consultant Advert

Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals wishes to appoint a fulltime Upper GI Consultant to join our ever-expanding team. You will play a key role alongside our other Upper GI Consultant in the development and delivery of Upper GI Services.

Main duties of the job

The Upper GI team sits within Digestive Diseases Clinical Business Unit under Planned Care.

Our CBU structure also encompasses the following specialities and services:

General Surgery inc Paediatric Surgery

Colorectal Surgery

Breast Surgery

Endoscopy and Gastroenterology

Theatres

Anaesthetics, Pre-Op and Chronic Pain

About us

The post is based at Warrington Hospital with additional elective work undertaken at the Nightingale Centre, Runcorn.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy benign upper GI surgery service with potential to grow in future. We provide full spectrum of benign upper GI surgery and general surgery services including treatment for reflux diseases, complex paraesophageal hiatus hernia and achalasia. Most of our elective general surgical procedures including gall bladder, inguinal hernia and incisional hernia surgeries are performed by minimal invasive technique.

We have in house GI physiology services for pH studies and manometry. We work closely with our gastroenterology department and provide support for nutritional MDT. We are part of our local upper GI MDT which is primarily run by gastroenterologists with close liaison with regional upper GI surgery and HPB MDTs with support of two dedicated specialist nurses. We have good communication channel to regional upper GI surgery through once in a month benign upper GI surgery MDT for very complex upper GI surgery patients.

The position is a 10 PA post and comprises of Theatre, MDT, Endoscopy and Outpatient clinics.

Our department has an active interest in clinical audit including contributing data for national audits and NCEPOD surveys.

We run a formal teaching programme and would support the candidate in Clinical and Educational supervision of junior doctors.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of interview date
  • CCT / CESR / European Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification

Desirable

  • Postgraduate thesis or higher degree

  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
