Job summary
We are seeking enthusiastic and driven individuals to join our dynamic and progressive Gastroenterology team. The appointee will be expected to be proficient in diagnostic and most therapeutic endoscopy and will be part of a GI bleed 1:7 rota. The post holder will not be expected to take part in GIM on-call.
The role will include a mix of speciality clinic and endoscopy sessions and will contribute to a 1:7 Consultant of the Week model delivering consultant led ward rounds on our dedicated 20 bedded Gastroenterology ward.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will contribute to the Consultant of the week (COW) model delivering consultant led board and ward rounds on the 20-bedded Gastro ward Monday - Friday. Consultants will also be responsible for seeing all inpatient referrals from other specialities. There is no outpatient commitment during the hot week but one inpatient endoscopy list.
There is an average of 5 new admissions to the Gastroenterology ward per day and 12 in patient referrals per day to be reviewed across the organisation. The Gastroenterology team does not have any outlier beds.

Endoscopy
The successful post holder will be expected to undertake 3-4 endoscopy sessions per week in a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Outpatients
Consultants undertake 2 clinics per week and templates are set to standard BSG guidance, some of the clinics are supported by specialty nurses. Clinics operate across both hospital sites within the trusts and candidates may undertake clinic sessions at one or both sites.
Consultant of the week
The service runs a Consultant of the week model. This role involves leading the consultant ward rounds on the Gastroenterology ward, reviewing specialty referrals, triaging GP referrals and undertaking 1 inpatient endoscopy list. There is no elective commitment during the hot week.
GI Bleed On-Call
The successful post holder will be expected to participate in a 1:7 out of hours GI bleed on-call to provide emergency endoscopy out of hours during weekdays and weekends. Emergency procedures out of hours are performed in Theatres supported by trained theatre nursing staff.
