Duties and Responsibilities
Communication and Working Relationship Skills
To communicate in a skilled and respectful manner with clients, families and carers who may have specific difficulties in understanding andor communicating and who may be distressed or present with challenging behaviour.
Liaise with other care providers pre-admission and discharge ensuring the best use of ward beds and ensuring all stakeholders are aware of the ward role and dimensions
To participate in clinical meetings and to work collaboratively with other colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team.
To organise and facilitate ward meetings, and participate in Trust wide meetings ensuring effective cascading of information to area of responsibility.
To ensure effective methods and systems are in place to facilitate communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, between ward based team members, ward members and other areas of the Trust and wider Network
To communicate complex and sensitive condition related information concerning the assessment, treatment and risk factors in relation to a range of mental health difficulties.
To establish and maintain clear and professional relationships with others at all times.
To liaise and work collaboratively with a range of other professionals in statutory and non-statutory organisations agencies and promote on-going team development in achieving all local and emergent strategies.

Analytical and Judgemental Skills
Participate in clinical audit and review results that affect own area
Investigating complaints and preparing a structured response following the investigation of complaints or clinical incidents
To undertake complex decision making across a variety of areas including risk management, financial management, flow and capacity.
To make sound judgements in a timely manner.
To consider a range of options that may require a degree of analysis, comparison or interpretation.
Ensure Healthroster is compliant and the authorised record is submitted to payroll by the agreed deadline each month.
Planning and Organisational Skills
Ensure nursing care plans and associated documentation are completed accurately, legibly and in accordance with Trust policy and NMC guidelines.
Demonstrate a depth of knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the MCA, MHA and DOLS and other legislation applicable to the practice area and how they are implemented in practice ensuring adherence to legislation at all times. Ensure that patients are aware of their rights under the MHA and that they are exercised appropriately
Implement and ensure adherence with Unit procedures and Trust policies.
Organise clinical meetings and ensure that interventions and services are planned in an integrated and co-ordinated manner to best support the clients and carers, this may include liaison with external agencies
Assist with the development and delivery and evaluation of evidence based treatments having a working knowledge of the Quality Improvement process.
Monitoring and audit of clinical work.
To develop the team to maximise skills and respond to change.
To ensure the appropriate delegation of tasks taking into consideration the skills and grade of staff members.
Actively participate in creating an open culture within the team so that concerns and challenges can be discussed safely and respectfully.
Responsibility for Patient and Client Care, Treatment and Therapy
Put people first and provide nursing care that is person-centered,safe and compassionate
To promote and uphold the privacy, dignity, rights, health and wellbeing of patients and their care givers at all times.
Responsible for the development and delivery of holistic care plans which are co-produced with patients and carers including assessing, planning, intervention and evaluation according to the trusts standard protocols and accountable for their own actions within the delivery of this care
Monitor and work with the team to ensure that patients risk is managed appropriately and that risk management plans are of a high quality
To monitor the provision of a range of therapeutic activities for patients by appropriate guidance and supervision of the team
To comply with Trust policies and procedures and the NMC Code.
Provide evidence based clinical advice in relation to the individuals in the care of the team.
Take responsibility for ensuring the safe administration of medication to patients where appropriate ensuring that the NMC regulations are followed.
Take responsibility for the assessment, observation and application of physical health care ensuring that staff are competent and confident to provide physical health care and escalate appropriately
Ensure that appropriate action is taken for safeguarding adults and children.
Maintain up to date clinical records in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with Trust policy.
Responsibility for Policy and Service Development Implementation
Implement policies and propose changes to practice, procedure for own area.
Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from audits, complaints and patient safety incidents
Lead within the nursing framework and work collaboratively with the MDT to ensure all staff development needs are maintained
Play a key role in clinical governance by providing expert advice, working to secure quality improvements, liaising with and influencing other disciplines,
Responsibility for Finance, Equipment and Other Resources
To ensure that team resources are managed appropriately to maximise care and efficient work patterns. This includes management of attendance, annual leave and the use of extra resources
Apply the principles of safer staffing ensuring financial constraints are adhered to in relation to ad-hoc usage of bank staff
Manage the wards budget
Meet monthly with the Senior Nurse Manager to discuss budgets and identify potential cost pressures and savings
Responsibility for Human Resources, e.g. Supervision, Training, HR Advice and Management
Ensure that all team members get appropriate support following clinical incidents
Ensure all incidents are documented as per Trust policy and any action and learning is implemented.
Co-ordinate the provision of teaching sessions in order to pass on knowledge and skills.
Lead and provide line management supervision, undertake Career conversations and HR processes, adhering to Trust policy and procedure
Produce staffing rotas, taking into consideration budgetary requirements, skill, gender and grade mix to meet clinical need. Have a working knowledge of the principles of safer staffing
Lead in selection and recruitment of staff within the ward

Responsibility for Information Resources and Administrative Duties
To be responsible for using an email account to generate, monitor, and respond to the e-mail traffic by which the Trust conducts much of its internal communication.
Ensure information resources including the Intranet are consulted regularly to maintain a current knowledge of Trust, Directorate and Team priorities and safety initiatives.
Ensure information is shared with key stakeholders and other agencies in a secure manner
Working knowledge of SystmOne and associated systems.
Responsible for infection control audits. Best practice and use of protocols in the ward environment.
Responsibility for Research and Development
Ensure the maintenance of the correct educational environment for student nurses and other learners.
Act as a resource and an advisor to junior colleagues in the delivery of research based programmes of care ensuring that appropriate assessment, planning and evaluation takes place.
To be aware of national and professional developments.
To participate in on-going training and education progress.
To demonstrate evidence based practice and participate in research/audit/pilot projects.
To be aware of current initiatives in inpatient care.
To promote service changes with positive professional attitude and fully engage in service change
