Job summary
This volunteer role will to support the research in decarbonising travel through E-bikes and E-vehicles within Devon Partnership Trust.
Main duties of the job
The Sustainability Analyst volunteer will support Devon Partnership NHS Trusts commitment to reducing carbon emissions by researching and evaluating sustainable travel solutions. Based at Prentice, Dawlish, the role focuses on exploring opportunities for e-bikes and electric vehicles to decarbonise staff travel and reduce grey fleet mileage. The volunteer will analyse data, review best practice across the NHS and wider public sector, and assess operational, financial, safety and environmental implications. Working closely with the Sustainability and Procurement teams, they will help shape proposals, identify viable implementation routes, and contribute to developing policies, procedures and recommendations that support a healthier, low carbon future for the Trust.

1. Research
e-bike opportunities
DPT
leasing or purchasing.
Individual
companies renting space on sites.
Maintenance
of the e-bikes and chargers.
Storage
(independent to DPT or how accommodate companies)
Policies
and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for both possibilities.
Fire
safety and legal responsibilities.
Costs
to rent/procure plus cost and emission savings (cost may be from mileage rates,
parking, decrease in parking fines).
Research
on what other NHS sites are doing but could also consider other government
organisation such as university, councils and met office.
Could
attend meetings such as Exeter transport group (CUA).
E-bikes
proposal got declined in 2024 based on health and safety and fire risks.
Would
be great opportunity to encourage in certain areas like Exeter/Torbay and
Bristol to reduce grey fleet mileage emissions. Also worth noting the health
benefits to staff e.g. less stress, ease of parking, reduced parking costs.
2. Plan to
electrify fleet.
Review
other organisations and how/what they have procured via approved routes taking
into consideration the mileage range required.
Analyse
current data from vehicle being tested (electric ford transit).
Data
research is similar parameters to E-bike above.
Work
with procurement to understand opportunities.
Compare
with other organisations.
Look
at travel data to understand requirements.
Ideally
want to enable fleets to charge overnight (unless on call).
Location
of electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs) externally.

- Confidentiality is upmost and we ask volunteers to be part of the team and be discreet and reliable.
- Ability to work under pressure and with competing deadlines.
