Job summary

We are searching for a 37.5 (full time) hours per week Band 3 Occupational Therapy Assistant to join us on Beech Ward based in Torquay, Torbay Hospital. Beech ward is a 16 bedded inpatient Mental Health Ward that supports primarily older adults with functional mental health difficulties.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team in a service that has been rated as Outstanding by the CQC. Working alongside a Band 5 and Band 6 Senior OT, and within the MDT, you will ensure that service users receive a high standard of person-centred care which enables them to recover in a timely way.

Main duties of the job

The team aims to provide a recovery focused Occupational Therapy service to support people to re-engage with their lives.

Working as part of the Beech Team for older adults who have a mental health illness who require an acute and inpatient admission, the post holder will support and assist the qualified OT. The post holder will plan and facilitate therapeutic activities on and off the ward according to patients needs, within the framework laid down by the supervising OT. The post holder may also carry out individual interventions in the community and in peoples homes, as directed by qualified staff.

The post holder will contribute towards the development of an innovative and needs led OT service as part of the Beech Team.

The post holder may be required to work across sites on our sister units when clinical need arises to support the fellow teams in service delivery.

  • The ability to use a varied range of communication styles to engage patients in one to one activities and group activities.
  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to create innovative solutions to help empower service users.
  • Assess patients response to activities and decide on appropriate action e.g. advise OT, summon assistance, alter the programme of activities.
  • Ability to follow instructions and report back to qualified staff as appropriate.
  • Plan and organise one off activity sessions on the ward, responding to the needs of small groups of current patients.
