Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior SAS psychiatrist based at the Ashcombe (admission) ward of Dewnans medium secure unit, Langdon Hospital. We are looking for a psychiatrist with excellent personal values and commitment to patient care. You will be part of a well-resourced and dynamic multi-disciplinary team at Ashcombe ward, helping patients progress in their care pathway towards rehabilitation ward, low secure wards or in some cases directly to the community.The post holder will work directly with experienced Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists who will act in the RC role; however the post holder will be expected to function in a senior role and will be expected to be leading the clinical team to a day to day basis with support and supervision from a ward passed Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist (who currently happens to be the Clinical Director for the Forensic Directorate).

You will be supported in developing excellent relational security skills and risk assessment and management of patients, majority of whom have come in contact with the criminal justice system due to their mental health difficulties. Opportunities will be there to get trained in structured professional judgement tools like HCR-20 and DUNDRUM. Close supervision and help will be available at all times. You will be supported to engage in CPD, audit and QI projects. You will also be supported to engage in projects that are in alignment with the directorates vision and needs.

Main duties of the job

Ashcombe ward provides admission assessment and treatment for 15 male psychiatric patients, majority of whom have come into contact with the criminal justice system or has a history of violent behaviour that requires care and treatment in medium secure conditions.

The post-holder will be part a Clinical Team providing senior psychiatric input for the ward; however will receive close support and supervision from an experienced Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist attached to the ward.

The post holder will offer assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients as well as other expert clinical services in support of patients and their families/carers as judged necessary. Main duties will include leading (with support from the consultant) and co-coordinating the care of 15 male patients, attending/chairing daily zoning meetings, weekly care review meetings, weekly risk review meetings, directorate operational management meetings, attending HCR-20 meetings. Post holder will be expected to prepare reports and provide oral evidence to Mental health tribunals and Hospital managers hearings. Post holder will also be expected to liaise and provide reports to the Ministry of Justice and other relevant agencies like court, probation and MAPPA. Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent
  • GMC registration.
  • Membership or Affiliateship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 7-8 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
