Locum Trust Grade Doctor in Older Peoples Psychiatry

Job summary

This post is to provide junior doctor support for the Beech ward. Beech ward is the inpatient ward for older people, based in Torbay Hospital. It is one of the three inpatient units for functionally ill older people. The expansive rural nature of Devon means that inpatient resources are often some distance from patients' homes. There are units for functionally ill older people in all three main population centres - Torbay (Beech Unit), Exeter (Rougemont) and Barnstaple (Meadow View).

Older people who need admission for organic problems are admitted to Belvedere Unit in Exeter. This specialist unit is a purpose built 16 bedded organic Unit, with modern architectural features designed specifically for patients with dementia. It fulfils the requirements for privacy and dignity, and is designed to try and meet the demands expected upon inpatient units for the foreseeable future.

We would love to hear from you if you are an enthusiastic and forward thinking doctor willing to take a clinical junior doctor role in our older people inpatient ward.

Main duties of the job

You will support the consultant, who will chair the PMR meetings on Beech Unit and see new patients soon after they are admitted. You will do the day to day ward work including the diagnosis and treatment for physical illness, referring to Torbay hospital medical staff as needed, admissions and mental state reviews.

Many of the patients admitted to the ward will be under provisions of the Mental Health Act. The post holder will be expected to have good understanding of the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act and Mental health Act whilst managing patients on the ward. The post holder is also expected to work closely with the community teams to enable smoot transition of care from inpatient care to community care and vice versa. The post holder is expected to support the consultant to lead the professional meetings, risk management meetings, as appropriate for patients with complex multi-agency needs to facilitate holistic care for them.

We work closely with the crisis and community OPMH teams to ensure that only the most acutely ill patients are admitted when they cannot be cared for at or closer to home. The average length of stay is 41 days. Early discharges are facilitated by the crisis teams.
