Nurse Practitioner (Eating Disorders)

Job summary

The Adult Eating Disorders Intensive Treatment service in the east of England is reforming and recruiting two nurse practitioners who will act as eating disorder specialists. The team offers an alternative to Specialist Eating Disorder Unit admission for people who are able to stay at home and begin their recovery there.

The team will work both virtually and in person and the postholder will need to be able to travel across the east of England region when required. They will be a keyworker, supporting up to five patients to restore weight each week in order to avoid the need for inpatient admission. Together with the multi-disciplinary team, the postholder will use specialist knowledge to facilitate patient recovery and ensure physical and mental health risks are managed.

Main duties of the job

Act as keyworker to a patient caseload
Liaise with the CEDS team local to the service user
Monitor the physical health of the service users, either directly or by supervising the senior support workers.
Use clinical interventions in weekly keywork sessions
Coordinate weekly review meetings
Liaise effectively with the other members of the A-EDIT team
Keep up to date with current thinking, research and guidance concerning the treatment of people with eating disorders
Supervise the support workers and mentor any student nurses who are allocated to the team

Job responsibilities

The postholder will:

In collaboration with other A-EDIT team members, work with people with severe eating disorders to prevent hospital admission or facilitate early discharge. This will include assessment of those referred to the service, care planning formulation, attendance at professional meetings, identifying and delivering interventions, reviewing support and participating is discharge planning meetings.

Provide nursing care in a person-centred way that promotes andfacilitates the positive health and well-being of people with eating disorders

Be responsible for providing specialist nursing care for people with moderate to severe eating disorders under the care of the team. Ensuring that interventions following NICE guidelines for eating disorders, meet Medical Emergency in Eating Disorders (MEED) guidance.

If not already trained the postholder will undertake training in phlebotomy to monitor the physical health of people with severe eating disorders under the guidance of the Consultant Psychiatrist. When the service need arises. Physical health needs of the services users will need to be managed jointly between the local CEDs and AEDIT.

Be responsible for the assessment of care needs/risk, formulation of care and risk management plans to meet needs of service users presenting with moderate to severe eating disorders. Co-produce care plans with the service user, carers and professionals with the aim of avoiding hospital admission and/or facilitating early discharge as well as supporting progression on the individuals recovery journey.

To respond to any crisis related to their eating disorder that a service user may advise of, with the aim of promoting independent and recovery whilst living in the community but in a way that safely manages that crisis.

In partnership with the consultant psychiatrists and AEDIT MDT, contribute to the management of service users in the community who are at high levels of risk, promote service user recovery and safety including liaising with the CEDS team.

Have a sound knowledge of medications and their desired and undesired effects when used for the team's service users.

Guide A-EDIT team members regarding their specialist area to ensure awareness and monitoring of signs of increased physical ill health risk by all team members.

Be a role model through their own good practice demonstrating Trusts values.

Be responsible for maintaining clinical standards, and team systemsunder the direction of the A-EDIT clinical leads including managing oneself in a professional manner, responding to requests, enquiries etc in a timely fashion.

Assist the team in maintaining effective team working processes, including contributing to the obtaining of outcome measures and participating in data collection activities.

Be expected to deputise for the A-EDIT Team Lead in their absence.

Undertake any professional training and learning activities to enhance skills and ensure continued professional development.

Partake in home visits alone or with other professionals in the MDT.

Partake in clinical and management supervision.

Provide mentorship and support for student nurses on placement in the service.

Remain updated and comply with local and national guidelines, policies and legal requirements.

Will be fully conversant and ensure compliance with NMC codes of

NMC.
