Have you had lived experience of mental ill health and inpatient services? Would you like to support current inpatient service users? If so, we would like to hear from you as we have an exciting opportunity to become a senior peer support worker (PSW) within the Acute and Urgent Care Division.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of individuals experiencing acute mental health needs, while supporting the development and wellbeing of the ward team.
The Acute Assessment and Short Stay Treatment Unit (AATU) will be a Female Only ward, providing single sex accommodation and has a multi-disciplinary team including psychologists, occupational therapy, recreational workers as well as the nursing and medical team.
This role is NOT eligible for sponsorship and you must have the right to work in the UK in order to apply. If you are a graduate visa holder, you must have at least 12 months before expiry.
Main duties of the job
The post requires the successful candidate to:
- share the wisdom of their own lived experience of recovery
- have a relationship of mutuality with service users
- inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others.
The post holder will provide individual supervision to the Peer Support Worker working within the ward, taking them through our 'Lived Experience Support Induction' and establishing their role within the multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will be an ambassador of recovery for the Trust with external agencies and partner organisations.

Using recovery principles and socially inclusive practice, the post-holder will support service users in their personal recovery journeys through the Mental Health Service. This means providing peer support for people who experience mental health and social needs. They will foster a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, to promote choice, self-determination, opportunities and hope. They will raise awareness about local resources and opportunities that may assist people in maintaining their recovery. They will encourage and support service users to use community resources that are available to them and support the Service with developing links with these resources. They will act as an advocate for recovery within the team and an ambassador for recovery for the Trust and with partner agencies.

- Completed peer support worker training (preferably accredited)
- Evidence of further training about personal recovery principles
- Level 4 LSBU accredited 'Developing Experience in Peer Support' course or equivalent level qualification
- Evidence of continuing professional and personal development
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Own personal lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges in the perinatal period
- Experience of having personally accessed inpatient mental health services
- Ability to demonstrate first-person experiential knowledge of recovery
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the concept of personal recovery as it may apply to others
- Experience working in a range of health and/or social care settings as a peer support worker
- Experience working with people with mental health challenges and supporting them to access opportunities beyond mental health services
- Recent experience of supervision of others (in paid or unpaid capacity)
- Recent experience in delivering courses and presentations to a wide range of audiences
- Experience in implementing recruitment and selection processes
- Experience in project development
- Experience working both independently as well as providing group and 1:1 activities
