Chemotherapy Manager, Garden Suite

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time band 7-unit manager on our chemotherapy outpatient unit on Garden Suite at the Alexandra Hospital. This post is a secondment to cover a 9-month maternity post. We are looking for an enthusiastic SACT trained band 6 nurse who wishes to progress in their career and experience managing a friendly and busy chemotherapy unit. The successful candidate will be supported by the Oncology Matron and SACT lead nurse consultant.

Main duties of the job

Ensuring safe staffing across the unit, ensure patient safety with SACT, manage staff sickness and wellbeing. Ensuring high standards of IPC protocols and cleaning, completing audits, attending Governance and relevant meetings. Working closely with our other unit managers within SCSD division.

To oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers in a chemotherapy outpatient setting.

Have continuous responsibility for the unit providing visible professional leadership and line management for a team of nursing and support staff.

To ensure a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff

and resources within the oncology / haematology directorate

To demonstrate strong clinical leadership in stressful and challenging situations

To act as advocate for the designated area and liase with all members of the multi-disciplinary

team to co-ordinate all aspects of patient care in the best interests of the patient

Ensure staffing is in line with Trust policy.

Be responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.

Champion a culture of learning and quality improvement in the clinical area.

Key Duties:

Clincial Responsibilities

Ensure high standards of patient care at all times challenging and ensuring others challenge practise, in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.

In collaboration with senior members of the Divisional team provide assurance that the standards set out in the relevant Nursing & Midwifery strategy and direction of Nursing & Midwifery for the Trust are delivered at unit level.

Ensure local plans support all clinical quality external accreditation, for example Care Quality Commission (CQC) essential standards.

Through visible clinical leadership ensure that the delivery of kind, compassionate and respectful care takes place, and that the unit team develop relationships with patients that involve better listening and decision making; no decision without me

Act as the patients advocate when appropriate, when informed decisions may lead to choices being made concerning treatment options.

Ensure that the delivery of care in the unit meets the individual needs of all patients, providing adequate food and drink, basic hygiene needs and considers inclusivity and personalisation.

Ensure that all patient care is assessed, planned, prioritised and high quality, both physical and psychological delegating to support staff as required. Seek advice and support from other staff as required.

In accordance with individualised patient care, ensure clinical observations are taken results recorded and any appropriate actions taken based on the results.

Ensure the maintenance of professional contemporaneous records at all times, document all actions and interventions in a clear and honest and timely manner in line with Trust policy.

Deal with concerns raised by patients and visitors in a proactive manner, review patient feedback results and update the units patient experience improvement plans, as needed.

Ensure on arrival to the unit patients, relatives and other staff are received in a professional manner and act in a courteous and polite manner at all times, thereby ensuring good public relations between patients, public and staff.

Store, check and administer drugs in accordance with the Trust Medicines policy.

Act as a clinical expert within Chemotherapy Nursing providing expert advice when required.

Demonstrate expert knowledge by being visible and accessible in the Clinical area and using clinical skills as required

Regularly administer chemotherapy to maintain clinical competency and skills

Managerial responsibilities

Manage the unit when on duty with overall continuing clinical responsibility, and lead a team of staff, in order to carry out delivery of care to a complex group of patients.

Ensure nursing practices comply with Trust procedural documents.

To ensure the Trusts risk management policy is appropriately utilised in the unit.

Manage the delegated budget for the ward/department, working closely with the Matron, General and Finance managers, working to achieve financial balance.

Ensure the health and safety of all staff, patients and visitors, reporting any incidents, hazards, or defects and taking responsibility to minimise risk. To implement action plans to ensure improvement if an incident has occurred and ensuring adherence to Trust policies and procedures.

To have local open and transparent communication channels that support the unit team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong.

Develop the unit team, ensuring a learning environment, leading by example and to be aware of the effect of change upon all bands of staff.

Lead improvement / transformation projects on the unit as indicated by local and national initiatives.

In accordance with Trusts policy formally agree with Matron / Lead Chemotherapy Nurse the units workforce requirements, monitor and review of nursing workforce as indicated, ensuring integration with the local delivery plan, and the optimal deployment of the nursing workforce.

In line with the Trusts e-rostering policy deploy staff to ensure safe and appropriate nursing care is given at all times. This includes the approval of ward / department off-duties anticipating problems where they exist and taking local / timely actions as appropriate.

As Line Manager, take responsibility for human resource issues including appraisal, personal development, sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance, recruitment and selection and personal career development delegating as appropriate.

Ensure all complaints both formal and informal are dealt with promptly and courteously in accordance with Trust policy. To respond in writing to complaints by interviewing staff, collating information and writing statements to provide evidence, reviewing practise where appropriate in response.
