Job summary

Are you looking for a new challenge in 2026?Are you a fully qualified ACP with a minimum of five years experience working with oncology and haematology patients?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Haematology / Oncology Team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals trust as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).

The ACP in Haematology/Oncology will support the medical and nursing teams in the management of cancer patients and will undertake reviews of patients within Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust working to agreed protocols and guidelines ensuring an efficient, effective and patient-focused service. They will also support the Lead ACP in developing the Acute oncology service at Worcestershire Hospitals NHS Trust as part of the 10-year Cancer plan.

The applicant must be a fully qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner with experience in haematology and oncology) and chemotherapy and have experience in undertaking independent examination of patients, independent prescribing, and providing an extended service as a sole clinical practitioner.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will:

Practice autonomously as an advanced practitioner within the Acute Oncology Service to provide patient-centred clinical care, encompassing the skills of advanced clinical assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment within an agreed scope of practice throughout the Department.

Demonstrate a high level of expertise within the Acute Oncology Service, providing advice, education and support to staff, patients, their families and carers.

Have responsibility for leading the on-going development of clinical practice and standards of care within the service, including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.

Support new ways of working that emphasises a more efficient, effective and patient-focused service ensuring safe referral and discharge of patients as appropriate.

Deputise for the Lead Nurse for the Acute Oncology Service, this includes the nurse practitioners, Acute Oncology Helpline and In-reach Services across the two Acute sites (Worcestershire Royal Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch).

Clinical and Professional

Act as an advocate for the patient at all times, ensuring a person-centred approach in overseeing the patients treatment and investigation pathway, ensuring that it is seamless and well communicated to all parties, including the patients.

To act as an expert practitioner to provide direct, specialised care including interventions and advice to patients within the acute oncology service and multi-disciplinary speciality teams demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of individual patients

Undertake telephone and face to face emergency assessment and instigate appropriate management of patients presenting acutely unwell to the Trust.

Responsible for escalating appropriate and timely consultation and / or referral when beyond the level of the post holder expertise / knowledge.

To make an autonomous assessment surrounding complex health concerns or situations to enable the initiation of nursing care and interventions to support the patients healthcare needs.

To utilise high level, advanced communication skills.

To use highly specialist nursing skills to assess the patients physical, emotional and social needs.

Consider the safeguarding needs of vulnerable patients e.g. those with cognitive impairment or disability.

To act as a patients advocate, ensuring the patient and carer are fully informed and understand the proposed care pathway and interventions therefore enabling patients to make informed decisions.

Ensuring that consent to treatment is established prior to any interventions when appropriate.

To act as an expert practitioner/coordinator for suspected Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression patients.

To provide a resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.

As an Independent Nurse Prescriber commence medications where clinically appropriate within

scope of expertise based on a robust assessment of patients condition.

Monitor and evaluate the patients response to treatment and advise nursing and other healthcare professionals on the revised care strategies to improve effectiveness of care.

Manage caseload independently, prioritising appropriately and ensuring resources are used cost effectively.

To ensure all information given and interventions recommended are evidence based and up to date.

To refer to appropriate social or health care agencies as required.

To have contact with patients and their relatives, who may be highly distressed and anxious, and to use advanced communication skills to provide supportive listening and assess psychological needs, providing practical and emotional support.

Liaise with the nursing and allied health professionals in clinical departments as they move between care settings along the patient pathway e.g. during treatment or admission.

Ensure the maintenance of professional contemporaneous records at all times, document all actions and interventions in a clear and honest and timely manner in line with Trust policy.

Deal with concerns raised by patients and visitors in a proactive manner, review patient feedback results and update the units patient experience improvement plans, as needed.

The post holder has joint responsibility with the AOS Nurse Practitioners for the daily running of the acute oncology service (nursing) on within the Acute Trust.

The post holder will advise the Lead AOS Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) if competencies are not being maintained in order for an acute oncology training plan to be devised that complies with Cancer Peer Review Measures and Trust standards.

To evaluate existing services, identifying areas for improvement and in collaboration with the Lead

Clinician and AOS Lead Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) and assist with development of business cases for presentation to the directorate.

In collaboration with the Lead AOS (ANP), AOS Nurse Practitioners, Matron and the review and develop policies relating to Acute Oncology ensuring based upon current evidence base.

To ensure patients accessing the acute oncology service have access to Allied Health Care Professionals in a timely manner either through referral or access to urgent consultation.

To ensure the oncology alert system is maintained.

Ensure the acute oncology service and staff are aware of and comply with current policies.

Ensure effective and efficient utilisation of resources, managing resources to achieve maximum value for money without detriment to patient care.

Educational:

Working in partnership with the AOS Service Lead cute and Lead clinician to develop a trust education strategy for acute oncology coordinating the delivery of training with other members of the team.

Advise on training and competency requirements in order to meet the quality surveillance measure for the acute oncology team and MDTs.

To be the AOS team lead to sign off competencies to the AOS out of hours band 6 nurse team

To work in collaboration with the expert advisory groups to ensure trust education strategy for acute oncology reflects the regional strategy.
