Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow (CT1-2)

Job summary

The Trust provides undergraduate teaching to medical students from the University of Birmingham, University of Warwick and Three Counties Medical School.

This is one of a number of Teaching Fellow posts that support the delivery of education to medical students including, but not limited to, bed side teaching, tutorials, high fidelity simulation and study days. Clinical Teaching Fellows support completion of medical student assessments and examinations.

Exposure to a clinical speciality of the successful applicants choice will be encouraged as teaching commitments allow.

Applicants who will have already completed one year as a Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow at the point that these posts commence are eligible to apply for another 12 month fixed term post; this is on the understanding that a second year Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow would undertake another year of higher PG education qualification (such as, PG Cert continue to PG Dip).Following completion of a second year Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow post it is anticipated that doctors will return to clinical practice or clinical training.

Main duties of the job

This is one of a series of posts combining experience in a clinical specialty with undergraduate teaching of medical students at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

This 12-month post is suitable for trainees whose career would be advanced by the opportunity to develop their teaching skills. It may also appeal to higher trainees who wish to take time out of a training programme, subject to the approval of the appropriate Specialist Training Committee. Remuneration for 40 hours (which is 1 Whole Time Equivalent WTE) will be at the appropriate local nodal point for Trust junior clinical fellows, for daytime duties. Successful candidates will be required to work across both the Alexandra and Worcestershire Royal Hospital sites. However the post holder may be required to work at any location within the Trust should the need arise.

The successful candidate will be funded to complete the PGCert in Medical Education at the University of Birmingham. This is based on employment for 12 months and early termination of the post will result in withdrawal of funding and/or the candidate will be required to pay the academy back.

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to carry out these key duties:

TEACHING

  • To contribute to teaching across the Undergraduate Curriculum for years 3, 4, and 5 medical students from University of Birmingham; to contribute to the teaching of medical students from University of Warwick/Three Counties Medical School; contribute to the teaching and support of other medical students (such as elective students) at the discretion of Head/Deputy Head of Academy. It is expected that a 1WTE Fellow will commit a minimum of 7 sessions per week to undergraduate teaching.
  • To assist with organisation, monitoring and teaching of the undergraduate teaching programme.
  • To assist in reviewing the current structure and organisation of undergraduate teaching within the medical specialties to instigate appropriate modifications.
  • To contribute to specific teaching including simulation, study days and induction programmes.
  • Act as an examiner for Birmingham, Three Counties Medical School and Warwick Medical Students as required.
  • Accountability, with respect to the performance of teaching duties to the Lead Clinical Teaching Fellow and Head of Academy.
  • The post provides the opportunity to study part-time for a clinical educational qualification. This is strongly encouraged.

CLINICAL

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will be encouraged to gain exposure to a clinical speciality of their choice for up to 2 sessions per week such as clinical department capacity and educational commitments allow.

It is expected that the successful candidate 1WTE will be allocated a minimum of 7 regular sessions each week to clinical teaching for students. One session per week will be allocated to preparation, audit and CPD. The teaching sessions will be timetabled flexibly to accommodate the students other commitments. Candidates will be required to work across two sites, the Alexandra Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital, in order to accommodate the Undergraduate Academys ability to meet medical student learning outcomes with in the current training programmes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Full registration with the GMC is essential.
  • Candidates for the post of Clinical Teaching Fellow should have completed two years of General Professional Training equivalent to Foundation Training.
  • The post does not currently have educational and training approval from the Regional Postgraduate Dean.
