Locum Consultant in T&O - Knee Surgery

The closing date is 28 December 2025

Job summary

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant in Knee Surgery to join our expanding Trauma & Orthopaedics Department.

This is a replacement, whole-time post designed to meet increasing elective and semi-elective knee demand alongside delivery of a safe and sustainable trauma service.

You will join a department of 24 Orthopaedic Consultants, supported by registrars, SAS doctors, advanced practitioners, extended-scope physiotherapists, and a dedicated orthogeriatric service. The Trust delivers approximately 1,200 hip and knee arthroplasties per year and runs established Virtual Fracture Clinics, lower limb arthroplasty MDTs, and enhanced recovery pathways.

Worcestershire offers the best of both worlds a historic, well-connected city with excellent schools, affordable housing, and easy access to Birmingham, the Cotswolds and motorway networks.

The department is a recognised training centre for Trauma & Orthopaedics with regular involvement in teaching medical students (Birmingham & Warwick), core trainees and higher surgical trainees. Participation in audit, quality improvement and undergraduate/postgraduate teaching is expected.

Interested candidates are invited contact Mr Usman Ahmed Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Main duties of the job

The post is suitable for candidates with fellowship training in knee soft tissue reconstruction and joint preservation. Candidates within 6 months of CCT or returning from fellowship are welcome to apply; mentorship and phased development for revision will be supported. Those with interests in research, simulation, teaching or innovation (digital health, PROMs, pathway redesign) are particularly encouraged.

The successful candidate will provide:

  • Weekly elective knee clinic sessions at Alexandra Hospital Redditch.

  • A dedicated knee theatre list at Alexandra, with opportunities for dual consultant operating and mentoring where required.

  • A day-case lower limb list for arthroscopy and soft tissue knee surgery.

  • Trauma theatre and on-call duties as part of the consultant trauma rota (currently 1 in X with prospective cover).

Office accommodation and secretarial support are provided. The post attracts 10 PAs, with opportunities to negotiate SPA, research or leadership components.

Full GMC registration with a licence to practise is required.

Those trained in the UK must have CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry to the GMC Specialist Register at the time of interview. CESR applicants will be considered for a locum post if not yet on the specialist register.
