Job summary

Are you a passionate and motivated midwife looking to step into a senior leadership role? Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for the right midwife to join us as a Band 7 to lead our busy Postnatal Ward as Ward Manager on a 12-month fixed-term basis covering maternity leave. This is a key leadership role, working Monday to Friday, where you'll combine clinical expertise with operational management to ensure that women, babies, and families receive the highest standard of care during their postnatal journey.

You'll be at the heart of the ward, visible, approachable, and supportive, coordinating daily activity, overseeing staffing and resources, and providing expert clinical guidance. No two days will be the same: one moment you'll be leading the team through a complex clinical situation, the next you'll be planning staff development or working with colleagues to improve patient experience.

Main duties of the job

As Postnatal Ward Manager, youll play a key leadership role, with responsibilities including:

  • Leading the ward team to deliver safe, high-quality postnatal care.

  • Acting as unit coordinator to manage patient flow and daily operations as part of a roster with the other ward managers.

  • Overseeing staffing, rostering and allocation to maintain safe cover.

  • Providing clinical leadership and being the point of escalation for staff.

  • Supporting and developing colleagues through supervision and mentorship.

  • Ensuring the ward environment is safe, effective, and patient-centred.

  • Driving improvements in quality, safety, and patient experience.

Job Purpose:

To ensure that midwifery procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

To ensure good standards of practice in the Ward through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.

To ensure all staff are conversant and comply with Trust Policies and regulations, and complete mandatory and role specific training as outlined in the training needs analysis.

To monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, ordering replacement equipment together with maintenance of that equipment.

Management:

To ensure that a duty rota for the staff within the Ward will provide effective and well-balanced cover to meet with the requirements of a 24 hour service and ensures the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced staff at all times. Taking into account the budgetary constraints.

To liaise with other Ward / Department Managers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary, to place workload and skill mix as effectively as possible.

To inform and discuss with Matron / Directorate Manager any problems regarding midwifery management.

Allocate, co-ordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals

To manage the Ward / Unit allocated budget effectively to remain within financial constraints.
