Senior Cardiac Physiologist

Job summary

We are pleased to be able to offer a suitably qualified Cardiac Physiologist an exciting opportunity to join our rapidly expanding, friendly team of Cardiac Physiologists at the Worcester Royal Hospital. The post holder will be expected to perform independently a wide range of non-invasive cardiac tests such as ETT, holter analysis, ECG and be independently working in cardiac catheter lab during angio and PCI. The candidate must have an interest in Echo and be prepared to work towards BSE accreditation. There will be an opportunity to develop skills in TOE and a requirement to participate in the on-call PPCI rota.

As a family friendly department, we are able to offer this position as full time or part time. We are in the process of amending working patterns to include four days a week. In view of the proposed 7-day service we would be happy to accommodate weekend working, if this is desirable.

We have 14 Consultant Cardiologists within Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, and the trust comprises of three hospitals: Worcestershire Royal Hospital, the Alexandra Hospital, and Kidderminster Treatment Centre.

Main duties of the job

Undertake a Specialised Physiologists role in the invasive PCI service based in the Cardiac Catheter lab. Perform unsupervised monitoring of cardiac haemodynamic, invasive intra-cardiac pressures on clinically high risk Cardiac patients. Alerting Physician immediately of any changes in parameters. Including preparation and management of balloon pump equipment for insertion of intra-aortic balloon.

Perform Echocardiograms independently according to BSE guidelines or working towards this.

Perform as lead Physiologist in Cardiac Physiologist led Exercise Tolerance Tests. (ETTs) Without supervision, analyse and report the results of the procedure, in accordance with national and departmental protocols and procedures.

Prepare, hook up, remove, download, analyse the recordings, providing written reports on 24 hr Ambulatory ECG recorders, Blood Pressure recorders and Cardiac Event recorders, according to the departmental procedures and protocols.

Perform Electrocardiograms on all categories of patients within the trust. Interpret the results and inform the relevant Physician of any adverse abnormalities, as per the departmental protocol and procedure.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To become competent and responsible for carrying out a wide range of complex invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigations including Cardiac Cath Lab, ECG analysis, reporting of results and clinical interpretation.

To be working towards independently performing and reporting echocardiograms.

There will be indirect supervision by a Highly Specialised lead Physiologist or Head of Department for assistance when required prior to completion of department competencies.

The post will develop to include future supervision and training of junior staff and will also include some organisational duties to assist with the smooth daily running of the department.

Additional development of skills and knowledge in highly specialised procedures will be required whilst working towards highly specialised professional accreditation.

To operate to Trust, Departmental and professional guidelines and work always in a safe and responsible manner.

To participate in the on-call rota for Worcestershire Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI) service.

Key Duties:

Clinical:

Develop skills in chosen specialist area of Echocardiography and work towards accreditation in this area

Perform Electrocardiograms on all categories of patients within the trust. Interpret the results and inform the relevant Physician of any adverse abnormalities, as per the departmental protocol and procedure

Prepare, hook up, remove, download, analyse the recordings, providing written reports on 24 hr Ambulatory ECG recorders, Blood Pressure recorders and Cardiac Event recorders, according to the departmental procedures and protocols
