Junior Sister/Periprem Nurse

Job summary

We have an 18 bedded level 2 unit, looking after babies from 27 weeks gestation. We also have a 9 bedded transitional care unit.

We are passionate about, and promote baby friendly standards and family integrated care and are looking towards becoming a standalone baby friendly Neonatal Unit.

The staff on our neonatal unit are in sub-teams lead by band 6 nurses, focusing on areas they are passionate about within neonatal care. This gives staff excellent opportunities for both personal and professional development and job satisfaction.

We are looking for a dynamic clinical Band 6 within a Local neonatal Unit, who will also carry out a quality aspect to the role, serving as the Trust's PeriPrem Nurse and working collaboratively to implement and deliver the PeriPrem Bundle as part of the PeriPrem Quad.

The successful candidate will ensure the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources and to be available for advice and support within the specialty.

They will provide effective leadership and act as a good role model, as well as to liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family. They willsupervise junior staff and teach qualified and unqualified staff as appropriate.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources and to be available for advice and support within the specialty.

Provide effective leadership and to act as a good role model, as well as to liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.

To supervise junior staff and to teach qualified and unqualified staff as appropriate.

To liaise closely with person carrying overall responsibility for the ward/department in the absence of that person.

Work in partnership and serve as a PERIPrem Nurse within the trust, helping to foster a strong perinatal team (obstetrician, neonatologist, midwife, and neonatal nurse) (QUAD).

Collaboratively deliver and implement the PERIPrem Bundle within the trust as part of the QUAD.

Management

Promote effective communication with ward/departmental staff and multidisciplinary teams.

To manage effectively the ward/department in the absence of the Matron.

To prepare the duty rota for staff within the ward establishment. To provide effective and well balanced staff cover to meet the requirements of the service and to ensure the presence of a suitably qualified and experienced nurse at all times.

Facilitate confidence and enthusiasm amongst staff in the delivery of the PERIPrem Bundle elements.

Provide regular short reports to the PERIPrem team on key project metrics.

Interrogate neonatal & maternity Badgernet databases locally, to look at data completeness, and to support an understanding of missed bundle elements within care and other relevant issues.

Regularly liaise with multi agency stakeholders.

Participate in clinical audit.

Review, analyse and interpret national reports relevant to Peri prem and reporting on these when required.

Take an active role in the achievement and monitoring of quality standards.

Promote the work of Peri Prem optimisation within the trust leads in addition to providing education and training to nursing & midwifery colleagues and students.

Where appropriate link to the Maternity & Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme (MatNeoSIP) and the clinical driver Improve the optimisation and stabilisation of the very preterm infant.

Align with and utilise the BAPM Quality Collaborative Perinatal Optimisation resources.
