Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust

Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist

The closing date is 11 September 2025

Job summary

We are in a position to further expand and invest in our excellent Gastroenterology service, and are therefore inviting applications from dynamic and motivated individuals to expand our current complement of 7 consultants - these posts are fixed term for 12 months until end September 2026 and are being advertised in advance of advertising two permanent posts.

The new appointee would have general luminal Gastroenterology and endoscopy skills. Expertise in other sub-specialty interests is encouraged, and we would look to accommodate. This would include, but is not limited to, ERCP, EUS, VCE and Nutrition. A research interest could also be accommodated.

Our trust comprises 3 inter-linked hospitals including Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital - Redditch and Kidderminster Treatment Centre. Successful appointees would be expected to work across sites with an in-patient ward base at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. We serve a population of 600,000 and currently provide out-patient Gastroenterology at three sites and an in-patient service at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

An on-call endoscopy and referral service is provided to Redditch by the on call Gastroenterology consultant. ERCP, EUS, oesophageal and colonic metal stenting, complex therapeutic colonoscopy, VCE and bowel cancer screening are all performed. Weekly multidisciplinary meetings are held to review all cases of GI and HPB cancer. There are also monthly MDT meetings for IBD and GI pathology meetings.

Main duties of the job

The service is currently supported by 4 IBD specialist nurses who manage the helpline for symptom management, drug side effects & complications. They also manage the video capsule endoscopy (VCE) and biologics service. In addition, we have a Liver CNS who performs FibroScan, delivers routine cirrhosis surveillance clinics and runs a regular acute clinic for newly decompensated cirrhosis patients. We also have a nutrition nurse and a recently appointed Gastroenterology pharmacist to help support patient pathways further. There are 4 Gastro SpRs and a senior doctor in Gastroenterology in post through the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) scheme. We also have two Tier 2, and one Tier 1 Physician associates (PA).

We hold spoke status in the new West Midlands endoscopy academy and completed the build of a new 5 room unit with teaching facilities in Kidderminster treatment centre and have the latest available high-quality endoscopy equipment across our sites. We have recently set up and delivered our first essential training in EUS for nurses course. There would be capacity within the job plan to develop a teaching interest with a view to contributing to the development of the endoscopy academy and in the longer term delivering teaching on a regular basis in addition to JAG approved endoscopy courses.
