Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a nurse to join our growing Interventional Radiology team at an exciting time of investment and development in Interventional services.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners, Support Staff, Radiographers and Consultant Radiologists to deliver high standards of care within the imaging modalities of Interventional Radiology, Fluoroscopy, CT and MRI. The varied nature of this specialty means there is always something new and interesting to learn.

Main duties of the job

This is an opportunity for Registered Nurses to develop their career and skills within the imaging speciality to deliver the highest standards of care during specialist diagnostic investigations, interventional procedures and therapeutic interventions. The post consists of a variety of roles including working as a scrub assistant for sterile interventional procedures, circulating duties for recording patients observations, IV drug administration and managing patient care pre and post stages of treatment. Management of the IR team and running of the rooms day to day duties, ensuring the Patient lists run smoothly and assisting the band 7 IR manager, where appropriate.

Previous radiology or other relevant experience is essential.

The service will expand to provide emergency services out of hours and successful applicants will be required to participate in the on call service following completion of a competency based training package. We also cover cross site working; this means supporting the Alexandra Hospital and Kidderminster Treatment Centre, so successful applicants will need to be flexible with covering all sites.

ROLE SUMMARY:

To be responsible, with the support of the manager, for the day to day, smooth running of the Interventional room/s.

The post holder will work initially within the radiology department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. It is anticipated that the service will extend to include travel by the post holder to other sites including the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch on a rotational basis to meet the requirements of the service. The post holder will also be expected to support a 24/7 service when this is developed.

The post holder will ensure the provision of effective, efficient and appropriate high quality patient care within the Interventional Radiology Department, act as patient advocate throughout the Interventional Radiology process and promote evidence based practice and act as an accountable role model and clinical expert. The post holder will work closely with multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of nursing practice and staff development. As this is a new role, training and support will be an important part of the role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Professional/Clinical Leadership

Where applicable, the post holder will take charge of the team/ward/department on a regular basis.

The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant and specialised forms of care without direct supervision and is required to demonstrate procedures, supervise registered and/or unregistered staff and student nurses whilst maintaining a safe working environment.

The post holder will be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for interventional radiology lists at all sites.

Implement a nursing plan for an assigned group of patients, indicating assessment and re-assessment formulated for individual care plans.

The post holder, following training will be expected to be confident in assessing all patients for any invasive radiological procedure; being able to plan each patients care, safely monitor throughout, sedate as required, recover and discharge the patient. Assist as required with a wide range of invasive procedures including; abdominal and aortic stenting, arterial intervention and percutaneous work.

Many patients are acutely unwell requiring emergency procedures so the post holder must be confident in managing these patients while their condition is unstable in the isolated environment of Radiology with support from the Consultant Radiologist

The post holder will be required to report and document relevant information, using their initiative and communication skills to liaise with the Radiology team and other professionals. They must be confident and competent to react to any concerns or circumstances immediately.

The post holder will be expected to scrub alongside the Consultant Radiologist in the theatre environment for interventional radiological procedures. Being able to assist the Consultants and communicate any concerns or issues during complex procedures.

The post holder will be able to monitor the sedated patient and give IV medication as prescribed by the Consultant Radiologist within the scope of the radiology sedation policy. Recognise changes in the patients observations and act accordingly.

Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to NMC standards (including electronic records).

Ensure the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of patients/clients, relatives and colleagues are respected at all times

The post holder will participate in a 24/7 on call rota for emergency procedures, once established.

The post holder is expected to be able to use their initiative while in this busy environment and be prepared to continually improve their practice, assisting with the introduction and implementation of procedures protocols and other documentation.

The post holder will be required to wear a lead coat for long periods while in the interventional rooms.

Provide highly specialised advice concerning care to staff, patients and relatives.

Develop own knowledge and skills and contribute to the development of others.

To act as a mentor for junior staff, to participate in teaching for all learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with the Clinical Facilitators. To provide support and clinical induction programme to the interventional room/s.
