Theatre Practitioner- Scrub Kidderminster Treatment Centre

Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Nurse with scrub experience who is committed to excellence in perioperative care of patients undergoing a variety of day and short stay surgical and therapeutic procedures.

All staff will be supported through a comprehensive induction and mandatory training programme as well as competency training packages for people new to the Theatre environment. We provide opportunities to complete development pathways and offer extended training to support individuals in their existing theatre roles.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the maintenance of a high quality, patient focused care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources

To have the self-confidence toact as a positive role model within the department

To provide and maintain a safe environment for all patients attending theatres for a surgical procedure

To co-ordinate and deliver person-centred care including carers, families and the multidisciplinary team.

To provide supervision, support and education to qualified and unqualified staff

To act as patient advocate throughout the peri-operative process

To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of individualised care

To be responsible for the organising of the peri-operative care of assigned patients in a designated area of theatres

To take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, including the delegation of patient care to staff with the appropriate level of skill at all times and to report any accidents / incidents to the team leader as appropriate

To maintain accurate records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used

To be responsible for the accurate and timely completion of all patient care records on the electronic patient management system

To be responsible for attending training sessions for the safe use of medical devices and equipment and ensure that all equipment is used safely and maintained in accordance with the manufacturers instructions

  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care throughout the peri-operative journey, particularly in the scrub role.

  • Support the scrub team, ensuring safe and effective theatre care.

  • Act as the patients advocate, prioritising their needs and well-being throughout the peri-operative journey.

Scrub Specific Duties:

Assist the scrub team to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care during surgery. Ensure surgical instrument management, aseptic techniques, and theatre setup, is delivered safely and in line with best practice. Prepare, use and maintain scrub equipment and consumables to ensure safety and compliance. Assist in managing surgical complications, ensuring a timely response to any changes in the patients condition. Ensure the theatre environment is prepared, socked and equipped to handle elective and emergency procedures. Monitor and review surgical procedures and patient progress, ensuring safe handover to recovery teams. Maintain accurate scrub and theatre records in line with legal and Trust policies.

Management:

  • To deputise in the absence of team leaders in managing staff within the team, ensuring high standards of performance and teamwork.

  • Ensure that all safety measures are in place. Report all accidents, incidents, and near misses to the theatre coordinator or senior team leader.

  • Contribute to risk management by identifying and mitigating risks within the department.

  • Foster a supportive, team-focused culture that encourages learning, development, and continuous quality improvement.

  • Promote a culture of safety and learning, encouraging a no-blame approach.

  • Ensure equipment is used safely and is maintained to a high standard.
