Job summary
This post is for a Specialist Grade in Paediatrics based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The post holder will have the majority of their duties based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital but will be expected to undertake outpatient clinics in a variety of settings around the whole county, including Redditch, Evesham, Malvern, Kidderminster. The Maternity and Paediatric Services provided within Worcestershire have recently been reviewed through a joint process with NHS England and the three local Clinical Commissioning Groups. The model agreed sees all Inpatient Paediatric and Neonatal Services based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital. All births will be at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital with the option of the CCGs commissioning a Midwifery Led Unit in North East Worcestershire in the future should they wish to do so. There are no inpatient Neonatal or Paediatric beds at the Alexandra Hospital. The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch will provide an adult only Emergency Department although some children will be seen in a co-located Minor Injuries Unit or General Practice Out of Hours Service.
Main duties of the job
This post is for an average of 0.95 PA per week though this is negotiable with a minimum of 8 PA per week. The distribution of programmed activities will be subject to job planning for this unique role agreed with the Clinical Director with regard to on call, outpatient activity and other aspects of Direct Clinical Care. The remaining PAs reflect supporting professional activities. These may include teaching, audit, research and CPD.
On-call at Worcestershire for this role will be 1:10 supported by the wider team of middle grade/speciality Dooctors.
Other models of care may emerge to meet the evolving standards produced by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (Facing the Future Acute Paediatrics and Facing the Future Forward Together).
The appointee will have a continuing responsibility to their patients, and will be expected to undertake all administrative duties associated with this care with additional support to supervise and teach junior medical staff as required.
The appointee will be expected to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate training. The department is committed to a regular intake of medical students from Birmingham University for their paediatric module. There is also a thriving regional GP vocational training course ensuring a high calibre of GP specialty trainees, and some will have experienced paediatrics in their foundation year training.

Provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and General Practitioners.
The post holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres and job plans may be revised in due course.
Responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in their charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to and training of their staff.
Provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
Provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
Attend multi-disciplinary meetings, which may be cross county and cross site.
Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.
Provide professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, assessment and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.
Participate in the middle grade on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with colleagues in post.
Whilst undertaking non-resident on-call duties, attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The Specialist doctor on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.
Participate in clinical audit as part of quality improvement activity under local arrangements
Commit to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by a trust approved appraiser
