Job responsibilities

You will be expected to:

Maintain clinical skills and service provision within designated specialities

Support the department in delivering continuous high quality clinical care

Demonstrate a high level of expertise within relevant modalities/area, providing training, advice, education and support to staff

Be responsible for ensuring the effective management and leadership of required services which will include organising workload, staffing and appropriate stock control within these areas

Ensure operational standards are met to maintain effective and progressive service delivery

Demonstrate effective communication with all staff including site/modality leads

Ensure, in line with site leads, staffing levels are managed appropriately maintaining a safe, efficient and responsive service within your specific area

Support and where appropriate, lead in the on-going development of clinical practice and standards of care within a specific service, including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues

Contribute towards service development and undertake clinical audit activity within specialist services as required

Where appropriate, support in the delivery of complex imaging techniques using advanced technologies, recording or reporting on the outcomes

Act as a specialist resource and provide specialist advice in relation to care of patients within your appropriate speciality(s)

Key tasks and responsibilities

Clinical and Service Provision

Provide a specialist clinical service and advice in a variety of clinical settings and disciplines for staff, patients and carers

Effectively liaise with multidisciplinary colleagues, patients and carers as required

Triage referrals from a variety of sources/ manage clinical priorities according to agreed protocols, working practices and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Work autonomously as an expert practitioner within the specialty, delivering individualised direct patient care

Work within a team and where required, lead a small specialty team in order to deliver effective direct patient care

Maintain up to date clinical competence and the highest professional standards

Practice within a risk-benefit framework, having regard to the biological effects of radiation and IR(ME)R legislation where appropriate

Where appropriate, interpret radiographic images to identify, evaluate and interpret normal and abnormal anatomy and pathophysiology relevant to an agreed scheme of work/scope of practice

Where required, ensure that all generated images are appropriately and correctly labelled in line with trust requirements

Where appropriate, assess patients and make reasoned decisions to initiate, continue, modify, suspend or cease imaging examinations, advising others in complex situations. This may include deciding on the appropriateness and suitability of specific exams considering physical and psychological parameters

Where appropriate, interpret results of imaging and where necessary, carry out additional, imaging, adaptation of treatment delivery or make independent recommendations for further imaging, assessment and required referrals

Where there is a requirement, supply, administer medicines within the legal framework and associated Trust Patient Group Directives (PGDs)

Utilise advanced knowledge and skills relating to the speciality to provide specialist advice to other members of the multidisciplinary team on the basis of image quality and clinical evaluation/reporting

Provide a seamless, high quality service from referral through to justification, authorisation, imaging/intervention, and where appropriate clinical evaluation (reporting)

Provide guidance to staff, patients and their carers on appropriate diagnosis/treatment pathways as appropriate

Support senior managers in the development and maintenance of referral guidelines and policies for the service as required

Communicate appropriately with patients and their carers, making reports if appropriate and liaising as required with medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team both verbally and/or in writing as required

Participate in the active engagement of service users through patient and family feedback, user groups and support groups when required

Use professional judgement to act as an advocate for patients to ensure a patient focused approach to the delivery of care. Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions relating to their examination, intervention and management. Escalate any concerns via the radiographic/professional structure as required

Ensure that agreed Quality Standards for Imaging (QSI) services are met in accordance with national and local performance KPIs as required

Report and raise concerns related to Safeguarding, accessing advice and support as required being conversant with Trust policies for safeguarding including the assessment of mental Capacity, and consideration of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards(DOLS) and the application of the principles of Prevent (counter terrorism awareness)

Ensure effective and accurate verbal or written handover of patients between healthcare professionals

Ensure that high standards of all documentation are maintained, with accurate, complete and up-to-date information regarding patient care are kept in accordance with Trust and Directorate standards and processes

Monitor the quality and standard of care provided by members of the team and staff in clinical areas. Identifying any skills or training gaps and escalating to the appropriate service y Leads or relevant line managers

Where a requirement is identified, undertake training to develop further advanced clinical practice roles required by the service in order ensure we continue to provide a high standard of patient care

Work within the HCPC Standards of Proficiency - Radiographers and Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics

Where required participate in rosters that incorporate extended 7 day working and work on different sites in accordance with service needs.

Ensure that all equipment belonging to and found within Radiology is operated safely. Report and stop the use of equipment where there is any risk to patient, staff or itself

Report any defects, malfunctions or faults at the earliest opportunity to the relevant site service lead Record all actions taken with respect to such equipment

Ensure the maintenance of safe, clean and tidy working environments, particularly the adherence of infection control procedures and promote and ensure the same among all staff

Expected to participate in role expansion where required

Demonstrate a flexible approach towards the hours and days of work. Will participate in work and duties as required relevant to both the directorate and wider hospital. To participate in any out of hours rota already established or established in the future

Can, where required, undertake venepuncture and intravenous cannulation for administration of contrast media, intravenous flush and other named medicines pertinent to departmental examination protocols, in accordance with the relevant PGD

Professional Leadership and Management

Provide highly visible and accessible, professional radiographic leadership and demonstrate expert knowledge and standards of clinical practice within appropriate areas of speciality

Safely and efficiently organise and prioritise workload in a departmental section or area, taking into account the patients clinical condition and referral clinical information. Where appropriate, to lead, supervise, advise, support and train Radiographers, assistant practitioners, Radiology Department Assistants, apprentices, students working in the same departmental area/section

Support senior leads in the management of staff sickness, where appropriate to include receiving of calls, organising required cover, sickness reviews and referrals to occupational health as required

Organise and prioritise the daily workload and all aspects of imaging examinations as appropriate, taking into account the demands on the service and maintaining efficiency

Support on the implementation and training of new techniques and equipment whilst ensuring that consistent competencies are achieved and documented in the appropriate way

Support with and maintain a robust training plan to support countywide working

Update and where required support to formulate staff rosters to ensure appropriate staffing of the area and maintain accurate roster records, ensuring service provision is maintained. i.e. To liaise with other areas of the department to ensure safe staffing levels are maintained, adjusting the rotas with respect to staff when sickness etc occurs. To be responsible for organising cover for both in and out of hours shifts where required i.e. when an unavoidable absence occurs, at short notice etc

To escalate issues arising that impact on service delivery to the modality leads and service managers

To perform risk assessments associated with service provision or changes in practice

Where relevant, observe and ensure adherence to current Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations , in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures and Local Rules

Where appropriate, ensure the radiation safety of all individuals in relevant working environments in accordance with the current IRR

When entitled to do so by the employer, undertake practitioner, operator, and referrer roles within current IR(ME) Regulations and all amendments as appropriate to professional practice

Promote team working; build rapport and collaborative working practices with MDT's.

Act as a clinical role model demonstrating high standards of clinical practice and provide support or advice to other staff when necessary

Participate in staff induction and update, review and revise all training strategies, competencies and plans in conjunction with the Modality lead radiographer

Experience

Essential

• Extensive clinical experience in Radiology with further specific expert modality experience
• Experience working in an acute hospital setting in a Senior Radiography post or equivalent.
• Good awareness of College of Radiographers and HCPC Code of Conduct / Accountability.
• Experience and awareness of change within Radiology
• Good awareness of National NHS priorities

Desirable

• Experience with undertaking robust Quality Assurance
• Radiation Protection Supervisor

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

• Comprehensive knowledge of latest IRMER and IRR
• Knowledge of the healthcare service sector and the systems and processes used.
• Knowledge of current radiographic issues and demonstrates up to date clinical knowledge
• Knowledge of Health and Safety issues

Qualifications

Essential

• State registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) or equivalent professional registration,
• Diploma of the College of Radiographers, BSc In Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent professional qualification
• Literacy and numeracy competence at level 2 or equivalent.
• Proficient in the use of a PC, including the use of software and systems
• Minimum of 2 years post graduate qualification
• Post graduate qualification in relevant area

Desirable

• Radiation Protection Supervisor
• Experience of leadership role to include skills around staff management, risk management, Infection control and
• health and safety.
