Band 7 Anaesthetic and Recovery lead

Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust has recently undertaken a multimillion-pound investment in the operating theatres at the Alexandra Hospital. Phase 1 involved the addition of 2 brand new theatres. Following the expansion, the Alexandra Hospital currently has 9 theatres including 6 with UCV and 2 dedicated recovery areas.

The operating department in the Alexandra Hospital currently provides both an elective and 24-hour emergency surgery service for adults across a range of surgical specialties. A vacancy has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and professional band 7 Senior Theatre practitioner to lead and manage the Anaesthetic and Recovery team on a full-time basis.

Our ideal candidate will be highly motivated and fully conversant with all aspects of current theatre practices. Excellent communication skills and a flexible approach are an essential requirement for this post as well as participation in programmes of additional surgical activity.

You will have experience of anaesthetics and recovery. Mentorship skills are an essential element due to the numbers and variety of student learners we support. The post holder will also have leadership and problem-solving skills, will assist in annual appraisals, stock and budget control. As part of the theatre management team, you will co-ordinate the theatre department and deputise for Theatre Matrons when required.

Main duties of the job

To ensure high standards of patient care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources

To lead a regular programme of education and development for registered and unregistered staff to optimum potential

To promote the role of the theatre practitioner as the patient advocate throughout the peri-operative process

To communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate all aspects of patient care

To liaise and work closely with the person taking continuing responsibility for the Operating Theatres

To accept personal responsibility and accountability for infection prevention and control practice

To deputise for the theatre matron as necessary

To ensure that duty rotas for staff provide effective and suitably qualified and experienced staff to cover the requirements of a 24 hours service

To actively participate in the co-ordination of the theatre department, ensuring the best use of available staff to provide safe patient care on a 24 hour basis

To meet with your team leaders on a regular basis both as a group and individually and to keep records of discussions

To take all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents/near misses on the datix system

To take responsibility for the investigation of incidences using the datix process and to ensure that learning is shared and embedded in clinical practice

To lead risk management within own area of responsibility, participating in the identification analysis of risk

To have an understanding of the theatre budget, ensuring efficient and effective utilisation of resources

To be conversant with trust policies, procedures and to participate in the development of policies/procedures where appropriate

To ensure that staff attendance is appropriately managed where it falls below trust expectations

To participate in the selection and recruitment of staff

To ensure that your team appraisals are effective and done in a timely fashion in order to identify training needs to develop both staff and the theatre service

To be responsible for the equipment in own specialty, ensuring that it is used safely and effectively, kept in working order and properly maintained

To be aware current and most up to date research and developments to ensure high standards of practise within theatres and to maintain a wide knowledge of current health / surgical / peri-operative issues

To facilitate teamwork and a no blame culture that supports staff to learn and develop

To assist and participate in the induction programme for newly appointed staff

To maintain a learning environment where the training and development needs of individuals can be met, supporting staff to develop clinical and managerial skills

To ensure all staff that are directly managed maintain high levels of mandatory training percentage through attending appropriate training or the completion of e-learning

To participate in the development of training programmes in accordance with identified needs and in partnership with the education facilitator for theatres

Professional

To maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of the theatre practitioner in the best interest of the patient and in accordance with the nursing and ODP codes of conduct

To promote a positive attitude towards peri-operative care and the trust

To be responsible for their own personal and professional development and attend all mandatory training

To encourage staff to participate in clinical supervision

To counsel staff in relation to personal and professional matters
