Operating Department Practitioners are vital members of our multidisciplinary team working within theatre departments. They ensure safe, effective, and holistic care throughout the patients perioperative journey and can also be found working in other areas such as A&E, Critical Care and Imaging Departments. The apprenticeship is an innovative route to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours required across a range of areas of perioperative care.

Main duties of the job

For the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be employed and paid according to the Band 3 pay scale as an Apprentice ODP on a 3-year fixed term contract and you will be required to work as part of the operating department team on a full time basis - 37.5 hours per week, working a range of shifts including weekends and nights.

You will be fully supported to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours that will allow you to work in a complex and changing healthcare environment.

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship you will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council to enter the Register of Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) enabling you to apply for Band 5 ODP job opportunities within the Trust.

The 3 year course combines work-based and academic learning between one of the three hospital sites within Worcestershire Acute NHS Hospitals Trust and you will experience working across county in all of our perioperative placement areas to gain wider experience.

Birmingham City University will provide this Apprenticeship, in which you will study for a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice, incorporating the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship standards for Operating Department Practice.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To support the qualified practitioner in the perioperative environment working under their supervision to perform a range of duties for which they have previously been assessed as competent.

To ensure the maintenance of high quality, patient focused care at all times

To have the self-confidence to act as a good role model, working with all members of the multi-disciplinary team

To provide and maintain a safe environment for all patients attending theatres for a surgical procedure

To act as patient advocate throughout the theatre process

Key Duties:

To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of individualised care

To support the delivery of peri-operative care of assigned patients in a designated area of theatre.

To take appropriate action to report any accidents / incidents to the team leader as appropriate

To maintain accurate records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used

To be responsible for the accurate and timely completion of all patient care records on the electronic patient management system

To be responsible for attending training sessions for the safe use of medical devices and equipment and ensure that all equipment is used safely and maintained in accordance with the manufacturers instructions

Education and Training

To participate in relevant education programmes and attend mandatory training days

Maintain a wide knowledge of current health, surgical and theatre issues by reading relevant journals and attending study days where appropriate

Provide feedback from in-house/external training courses in order to disseminate knowledge

To have an understanding of a range of work procedures and practices, which requires expertise within the speciality of the unit, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience

To complete all relevant on-the-job and off-the-job training as set out by the University and Trust whilst working towards the Operating Department Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship Standard.

To fully prepare for and pass the Operating Department Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship End Point Assessment process

Management

To manage a designated area in theatre on a day-to-day basis in the absence of the team leaders

Maintain the custody of controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, ordering replacements, checking and administering all drugs according to policy

To order and maintain adequate stocks of supplies and provisions, within the suite under the supervision of the team leader

To inform and discuss with the team leader any problems regarding staff management.

Ensure the health and safety of all staff, patients and visitors, reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses on the electronic reporting system as appropriate and to the team leader / co-ordinator as necessary

To be responsible for the equipment in own speciality, ensuring it is used safely and effectively, kept in working order and properly maintained

To assist in all areas of the theatre suite if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand

Promote and maintain good relations and communication with other departments, multi-disciplinary teams and within the theatre suite

To be conversant with and adhere to all Trust and departmental policies and procedures
