Job summary
The successful candidate will be working alongside a small team of Anatomical Pathology Technicians (APT's) who work on a rotational basis between the Alexandra and Worcester Royal Hospital mortuaries.
The post holder will be required to work primarily at the Alexandra Hospital mortuary .
You will be expected toprovide support to the team of APT's in the day to day running of the mortuary whichprovides a post mortem examination Service to the Local Authority, H.M. Coroner and the
Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust at the WRH & the Alexandra
Hospital.
Main duties of the job
- You will be expected to deal with direct and indirect enquiries or telephone calls as required. The post holder will be required to deal in a sensitive and empathetic manner with distressed relatives.
- To enter and retrieve patient information using the laboratory computer system.
- To admit and release deceased from the hospital or community, to include physical body checks and aministration tasks.
- To ensure adequate identification of the body is maintained at all times.
- To complete body checks for deceased
- Undressing of deceased.
- To carry out the day to day monitoring, cleaning and maintenance of mortuary equipment.
- To ensure accurate record keeping of temperature monitoring charts, cleaning schedules and capacity lists
- To ensure accurate record keeping deceased valuables and to conduct weekly safe check
- To assist in the receipt and control of consumables.
- To adhere to all departmental standard operating procedures, policies and health and safety regulations

- To provide support to the mortuary service that meets nationally accepted standards (UKAS and HTA).
- To effectively deal with direct and indirect enquiries or telephone calls as required. The post holder will be required to deal in a sensitive and empathetic manner with distressed relatives.

- To remove ICD and pacemakers and and arrange for ICD deactivation in the cardiology department. To reconstruct the incision after removal of device.
- To assist SOCO with fingerprinting of the deceased
- To record and store any drugs received
- To facilitate doctors completing cremation paperwork by allowing them to view deceased.
- To accept/record POCs into the department and transfer to the laboratory for disposal.
- Checking the generic email account to receive PM instruction, release paperwork, NOK statements and other communication from the Coroners Office and other external users.
- To arrange delivery of hospital notes for Coroners cases, and return after post mortem. To receive, store and return ED admission notes (where EZnotes is not available)
- Book appointments for viewings and identifications of deceased in line with departmental policy.This will involve speaking directly to the bereaved famiies and friends of the deceased patient.
- To facilitate transfers across. Eg bodies for PM/ collection.
- To facilitate the transfer and collection of foetuses to/from Birmingham Womens Hospital together with appropriate paperwork and record keeping.
- To ensure that all accidents/incidents occurring within the area of working are reported, via Datix in a timely manner and in accordance within the Trust Policies
- To frequently manoeuvre, transfer and lift bodies (average weight 65kg-140kg) using the equipment provided
- To occasionally manoeuvre, transfer and lift bariatric bodies (250kg+) with the use of the hydraulic hoist and Patslide.
- To perform any other duties covered by the post holders competencies after consultation and agreement with the line manager
- To use the Tutela system to monitor fridge temperatures, act on alarm calls received, and log in to the website to sign off alarm calls.
- To undertake office based work to include answering the phone, responding to emails and sending faxes.
- Reports fridge spaces to the mortuary manager/deputy mortuary manager/APTs.
